MikeJT
Hi all, I'm trying to establish if 50 025 Invincible carried a Royal Navy crest and more specifically whether the loco did so when running in the original Network South East livery? All the photos I can find would suggest not. I wonder if anyone can help? A combination of my ageing brain, the passage of time and a lack of helpful photos has left me pondering! Thanks all 🙂 Mike
RMweb Premium keefer Posted June 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 23, 2022 The names database at railway-centre.com says the Twinning Crest was unveiled at Plymouth 06/05/81 but doesn't mention a removal date. Quick look at images available suggest it retained them into LL livery, although in some pics it looks like they have been crudely removed (stolen?) They might have been removed anyway for NSE livery as the nameplates were mounted so high up.
RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted June 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 23, 2022 50025 had relatively small crests, and as Keefer points out, on going NSE the nameplates were raised, and it appears that they were not refitted. Whereas sister 50035 which had large crests, retained them, but under the nameplate when it went NSE. They also disappeared prior to it getting the later NSE livery. 50035 was somewhat an OC pet loco though.....
RMweb Premium keefer Posted June 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 23, 2022 (edited) March 1983, shows the crest (actually larger than i thought!) 50025 Invincible by Andy M, on Flickr May 1986 shows the crest missing: 50025-'Invincible' - Dawlish Warren. by Martyn Hilbert, on Flickr Photo from 1985 shows the other side to the pic above. Again, no crest. https://gdmkimages.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/old-scanned-photos-trains/ There seems to be a small mark where the blue paint has peeled off, presumably when the crests were removed. How were they attached? - if only stuck on, then it's possible they were nicked (and if only one set was made, they couldn't easily be replaced.) RMweb Gold TravisM Posted June 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2022 I remember having a very rare escorted visit around Bristol Bath Road in the late 70's and a Class 50 (I have no idea which one) was having it's nameplates and crest refitted after some bodywork had been done (I think it had been sideswiped), and the nameplate was attached with special screws and bolted from the inside, so to stop thefts. The crest's had the screws as part of the casting, and again bolted from inside. I could be wrong about this as I was a mere spotty faced sprog at the time and wasn't really paying much attention, also it's over 50 years ago 🤔 1
