Loco Braking Systems

Were any loco classes/sub classes (class 25 and 31) still vacuum braked only by the early 80s or would they have been dual braked by then?

Were there any locos that were vacuum braked only (of any class) still in service by 1990?

My 1982 Combined Volume lists a number of class 25s as vacuum braked only, spread throughout the three sub-classes. A small number of class 31/1 were also vacuum brake only. Most class 20, 26 and 27/0 were vacuum only, and there were a handful of class 37 and 40 that were vacuum only. i'll let someone else answer the question about 1990, but I cannot imagine there'd by much a vacuum-only locomitive could have pulled by then.

The thread title is a little misleading because of course all of these had air brakes on the locomotive itself. Vacuum was only used for train braking (although it also operated the loco brakes via a proportional valve).

... "Loco Braking Systems" could refer to any sort of loco, at any time from Trevithick to present day and to hand, vacuum, air, regenerative or even counter-pressure braking ! 😕

Looking at P5 dated 1986 we have;

25042 and 25224 both CD allocated

31126 229 271 at MR, 31160 207 at IM, 31215 277 290 at TE, 31234 237 at TO, 31240 298 at CW, 31275 at BS

By comparison there were no class 20s that remained vacuum only, but the following other classes were

26025 at IS

27002 004 010 012 017 018 020 023 033 036 037 040 at HA, 27014 029 030 at ED

37061 093 at GD, 37090 at ED, 37228 at CF
