My brother and I made a foray to Alsdorf in December 1983. Despite it being mid winter we were able to hire bikes from a shop pretty close to the DB level crossing crossed every so often by the EBV locos. Cycling to Alsdorf and (especially on the return late in the day ) it was ***** freezing (the weather was snowy with little sunshine . The bikes allowed us to get to the second EBV site at Siersdorf.

I still have a huge soft spot for the Br232, an imposing and good looking machine, it is one of those designs that is both utilitarian looking and with a bit of style (in my opinion anyway).

A few years ago one was used on a diagram around Erfurt. I thought a trip behind it would be pleasant. I photted the inbound working, went to Erfurt station and saw it sitting in the bay with the stock awaiting departure, went downstairs to buy a ticket, and by the time I'd got back to the platform it had gone and a DMU was in its place! 😡

Probably the only Soviet machine that was universally accepted and even admired.

The Ossies had a sense of humour when they named them Ludmilla.

Probably not very PC these days, but big, strong, Russian, and female just about sums them up.

I will allways remember them parked in pairs to keep the bridge in Dresden stable during the floods.

They were certainly more popular than the other Russian built diesels - DR Class 120, "Taigatrommel" - which tended to vanish fairly quickly from Germany after Reunification, though some still are in use in other Countries today.

When they were new they were actually classified as V200's and I've got one of the original side numberplates off of one of the class......

I grew up in Mansfield, Notts - an English coal mining town -  so I was always pleased to visit Mansfeld (Sudharz) - ironically also a mining area. We went to the area as part of our 'little did we know what's about to happen' tour in September 1989...

 

Here is 120 068 in full cry near Klostermansfeld

Late to this thread, but some lovely photos and memories.  Just a small request - could some locations and dates be edited in where absent?  Some are obvious (station names), others inferred (Kornwestheim with the withdrawn E93/E94s?) - but helpful to know!

 

Regarding the Dutch 1500 class (ex-BR EM2), I found them rather elusive.  As with other NS electric classes, they were allocated nominally to Maastricht, which was where I mostly went looking but only once found one.  As is clear from the photos, they tended to work on international trains out of Hoek van Holland!

Those days (1980s), I also tended to shoot mainly in black & white.  Here's a couple of "foreign" workings of DB locomotives from May 1981, two classes that I'm surprised haven't featured already.  103 on TEE stock at Basle Hauptbahnhof, Switzerland and 181 at Strasbourg, France.

Ratheim, Germany (near Monchen-Gladbach) probably 1986. It was freight only then, serving the Sophia-Jacoba coal mine and washery, Finally closed in 2009 and currently being turned into a new by-pass road, the station building appears to have survived though.

A minor point of correction if I may - there is no such thing as "Basle Hauptbahnhof". The main station is called Basel SBB and the separate station serving Germany is Basel Badischer Bahnhof

The EM2s were mainly confined to Hoek / Den Haag - Rotterdam - Tilburg - Eindhoven - Venlo axis afaik
