Had this super item come into work this week. Still has some of the original chocolate inside it plus a biscuit and a Boer bullet which was stopped by his belt during the relief of Ladysmith.

He also served in WW1 and later worked as a goods guard on the Midland Railway.

A wonderful item, with a terrific story to accompany it.

The nearest I can get is one of the WW1 Princess Mary Christmas boxes, though without any contents apart from the pencil concealed in a .303 cartridge case.

The bullet pencil is quite a sort after item now. I have seen them sell for up to £100.

It stays with the box, along with the death pennies.

I don't know which of either of my grandmother's brothers it belonged to, one died in 1915 and one in 1918.  The 1915 brother is listed at Thiepval...
