Fairweather
Good morning. I was wondering if anyone had any book or website recommendations for pictures/dimensions of the Wincanton station buildings? I'm considering having a go making them but can't find many decent pictures at all. Many thanks, Don
down the sdjr
The Somerset & Dorset Railway by Derek Phillips on Irwell press, has some good photos plus a track plan from 1921 and signal diagram.
RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted January 29, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 29, 2023 All the buildings on the Dorset Central were built to a standard design with only minimal differences. In the case of Wincanton. For overall dimensions they fit with that at Sturminster Newton . However as this Rimmer shot shows did not have a rear door. I don't think I have done Wincanton main building, but have done the box and Up waiting shelter I I have got quite a few negatives of Wincanton as I've always thought it a good location 2 1
Fairweather
That is super, thank you both. I'll get that book ordered, and thank you very much for the plans. I've not tried scratch building before, so should be an interesting challenge!
RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted January 30, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 30, 2023 I have at least 30 or so negatives of Wincanton and its buildings so can post more if interested and when the chance arises will see what I have in terms of plans. I'm sure there is something, just have to find it.
Fairweather
Any additional pictures would be a great help- it is very much a long term project, but as photos seem to be comparatively rare of Wincanton, any you would be willing to share would be much appreciated.

KeithMacdonald
Some Wincanton Station pics on Flickr e.g. Quote Wincanton station looking north towards Evercreech Junction, shortly before closure in 1966.
RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted February 4, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 4, 2023 That last shot, in the set above, of the station building, reminds me of the conversion of the Airfix church, which I and quite a few others made in the 1960s.
Combe Martin
Are you saying that the old Airfix church kit can be used as the basis for a Dorset Central station building ?

No, just that it reminded me that I had done that conversion way back and that the general layout of the building was similar. Now I shall have to show that, in an ancient snap taken by my Dad, who didn't use flash or have any fancy lighting available! The buttresses are a giveaway of the ecclesiastical origin of the kit. I am fairly sure that there was an article about converting it in one of the mags back then. Edited February 5, 2023 by phil_sutters
S&DJR Brian
Good luck with your project. I have some images on my old laptop of the station area which my late father took (early 60s and around closure ) which may be of use. Some of them are featured in Alan Hammond’s books on the S&D. Bear with me as I will take a while to find them and upload here.

Much overgrown, but with what might still be a couple of concrete lamp posts.
