BachelorBoy
I've searched for answers on the web. No luck, I'm afraid. So ... what do all the vents/grilles/louvres on a Class 37 do? What equipment are they for, please? Thanks in advance, BB.
BR traction instructor
1 & 6 are nose end grilles allowing air to be sucked in for the traction motor blowers/compressors and for vacuum exhauster air to escape. 2 are cantrail grilles allowing air to circulate freely throughout the engineroom/fumes to escape. 3 will provide ventilation for the clean air compartment/former boiler compartment on some locos. 5 is the radiator grille…air is sucked through this by the radiator fan, getting warmed by the radiators as it passes through before being blown out of the roof. Combustion air for the intercoolers/turbos is also a consideration but I’ll need to check a couple of diagrams first. RMweb Gold russ p Posted February 13, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 13, 2023 As that loco is a refurbished one the former boiler area had been turned into a clean air compartment with doors either side of the alternator . The compartment contains a rack of solid state electronic modules and rectifier on ETH one there is also the rectifier and contractors for that equipment Combustion air is drawn in through grilles 4 and furthest 3 cantrail grilles. I always thought it would have been better to draw it from the clean air compartment as air is cooler in there 1

45125
Combustion air is drawn through 2,4 and 5, they all have filter fitted. As built air for the boiler would be primarally be drawn through grill 3. The " clean air " compartment is not air tight so even on a refurbed type combustion air would be draw from it as the turbo are quite close to the wall.
