Hornby 4472 1980’s period

Recommended Posts

I have an NRM edition of 4472, with smoke deflectors and double chimney. I want to backdate it to 1980’s style and so far I have identified the following alterations.

Replace double chimney with single-I have a nice brass one from a previous A3 reworking

Remove air pipes and fit vac pipe to front buffer beam

remove/replace OHL flashes

is there anything else?

I have to fit a new dome as this one went missing a long time ago and I never found it. I’ll chop out one from a GBL static A3 as it looks the same. A7DC64E3-EFF6-489A-8DAA-6936595C1960.jpeg.cff2670e6ea88348dec0d5e78b99625e.jpeg73F50F49-1708-4524-A992-C30EA4BE4448.jpeg.78b9c3702e98421691f480a732c3f54e.jpeg

Depending on when in the 80s you want to model it, the tender varied. Until about mid-1982 the tender back still had the cut outs around the corridor connection, from when it was used behind an A4 in the 1948 exchanges.

LNER A3 no. 4472 LNER A3 Flying Scotsman at Manchester Central 18.4.1964

For the next couple of years it ran with 4498's tender, complete with cast LNER on the side.

Then by the time it went to Australia it was fitted with its original tender but with the top corners reinstated.
