We bought tickets for the day so we could get off the train to explore plus get chance to travel behind each of the two engines in steam, “Tom Rolt” and “Douglas”. Tip: we paid £50 for our two adult tickets as I rounded it up to include a donation, I also made it “Gift Aid”. When we presented our tickets via the phone, we got a £4.60 voucher to spend in one of the cafes. This meant we got a tea and a coffee for a quid.
We started our journey at Tywyn Wharf  Station. Saturday had been very nice weather but yesterday had started with rain but cleared up to be fine all day.

We got off at Dolgoch Station in order to see the waterfall which is just a short walk away. This also enabled us to then travel behind “Douglas” back up the line and then for the return trip to Tywnn.

The train stops here for 25 mins which ensures the cafe is busy 😄

For me, one of the top heritage railway experiences is sitting with a cup of tea on a bench at Abergynolwyn on a sunny day, watching the loco simmering.

Got back to the camp site to find a seagull waiting for us. He had helped himself to the rubbish in the bin liner outside the van the night before and had come back for seconds 😁

Really enjoyable weekend and certainly worth another visit.

Cheers, Ade.

Morning Adrian,

We always enjoy our visits to the TR. Although I’ve been a member since the 1970’s I’ve always found it to be the friendliest of all preserved railways.

Last year we stayed at a CL at Hendy, on the edge of Tywyn…. With its own halt.

The site was good, including ehu, but you need blocks as it’s on a slope. Loads of space and very quiet. Ideal being so close to the railway.

Other than the seagull, what was you site like?

Loco no 5 seen from the bridge at Hendy Farm:

Our pitch was huge, with a view of the distant mountains:

As someone said, Abergynolwyn is a lovely place to sit and admire the engines:

From the TR, we headed to Bewdley for the Severn Valley Railway, which we found to be very unfriendly.

Hi Neal, sounds another good place to stay.

We loved the site we stayed at. Very laid back lady owner. Rang up and made the booking, she didn’t want any money up front or any vehicle details, just name and phone number. Turned up and paid and she said park where ever you wish, but recommended the little paddock where we pitched up. We will certainly go back again.

Cheers, Ade.
