Bregstadt, a first exercise in 1:120 scale

The high level round the back is taking shape rapidly.

The Redutex for the stone walling arrived.  I'm a little less than exstatic about it as the colour I wanted is a little too regular in its stone size.  Although it is 1:87 the stones still seem on the small side, and it is a bit of a menace to get level- more imperfections to disguise...

Having the road down to the bottom level from the middle may be storing up scenic issues for later, but...

Wall now Redutex-ed through to the Donaueschingen end.  Next here is to build the frame for the bank- I'm using coffee stirrers and sprues from laser-cut card kits- flat and lightweight.

pedestrianbridge1.jpg.acd4e45baab7988e3c33887afcb7d438.jpg

A close up of the pedestrian/trackway bridge at the Furtwangen end.  Sourced from eBay it is actually intended for OO9 layouts, but it is about the size I want.

Lots of second-user stuff coming, which should see the loco and railcar stock as good as it needs to be.  Maybe another railcar as a spare in the future, and definitely a few more vans due but the trains are now just about sorted.  Decoder fitting is another matter- I have a baglog to tackle.

Arrivals will be photographed as they are readied for the layout.

The engine shed and other ground-level kits have arrived.  As the footprint of the engine shed determines the slope in front of the flats it is first of the five to be tackled.  A laser-cut card kit by Igra there seem to be about 170 parts to it- an awful lot but not the most ever- the station building on Bregenbach had more.

ststion-1.jpg.25bcf4aca163489d017dba288c24e79e.jpgBregenbach's station building.

However, the new shed takes me back to the early days of building white metal locos, when you would sometimes get an exploded diagram or two that wasn't easy to follow, and a closely-typed instruction sheet running into a few pages that were incomprehensible enough to have been written in Czech....

The engine shed has a 17-page instruction boooklet that IS written in Czech...

Behind it the flats are bedded in ready for the slope to be put in.  Meanwhile some more trains have arrived.  More later on these.

plaster1.jpg.5e27381e5e2b384ce8e3a8bf79f9f517.jpg

Messy job number one done- the banks have now been plastered.

furtend7.jpg.a95b8abe4afb28340b086a988888f9ea.jpg

.... and the base layer of improbable green added to give a colour underneath the grass.  That will be added in the next day or two as the layout has to come down for a week or so while Bregenbach im Schwarzwald goes to Ruddington show at the start of July.

donend7.jpg.1a70cf5cab0307b4a9e08f8fbab2014f.jpg

The other end of the improbable green.  It makes an improvement on white or wood/card frame.  Also in view a couple of the new acquisitions, a pair of sliding door wagons.  These were in a batch of goodies with a railbus set and some trailers, bought secondhand. I'm not sure whether to keep these with Tillig couplings or add them to the fleet of vans that will be shunted.  I've got the luxury of a few months to decide what goes in which category.

class798plusferkel.jpg.97be334fd6485456b9f77bc123b4ad98.jpg

Another acqusision in the parcel - posed on the layout with the power off as I've run out of decoders.  The 795 set now gives me the basic branch passenger train sets with the Ferkeltaxe behind.

class798two.jpg.6e40ee53e75661708461b51bcef78c9b.jpg

A view from the other end.  I think this is actually a VT and a VB set, so I'll have to look out for a driving trailer to make the train bi-directonal.  I suspect I may also have to do the same with the Ferkeltaxe.

ferkeltrailers.jpg.557750721ef128d631295503b91a1fa0.jpg

In the same batch of goodies (all bought from someone who is moving up to O-gauge) three railcar trailers, BTTB in origin.  I'll work on these to make them into a set that can be hauled by one of the small diesels as a backup passenger set.  They will get the Bregtalbahn crest over the DR on the sides- I must get on to those nice Fox people and order a transfer sheet....

More later.

Shed and wall progress.

The end of the wall has now reached the bank, so the improbable green can be covered over.

Below it the shed now has the first of its roof trusses.

20230620_080252.jpg.0102c3bbf7732655c3ead87fd3c3e78d.jpg

The improbable green has now been covered with a first layer of static grass.  Like all static grass it sticks at the angle it wishes to stick at and some will then allow itself to be dragged nearer to vertical, but it is a hairy green carpet that isn't a uniform shade.  Variations and clumps will be applied later.  The road will get another coat of grey after next weekend when the layout is re-erected after Ruddington show.

The other end.  An out-of-sequence pic with more done on the shed.

20230621_113742.jpg.dbd54b9c7d2ab7f75aec76d139f16ad2.jpg

Trigo has arrived and,  after an interval,  so has its chip.  Running in largely successful, though there is a little bogie lift on the radius 2 curves.  I'll do the same as I did to 60004 and cut a couple of turns off the bogie spring and apply a little lead to the underside of the bogie to help it stay on the track.  It is intended mainly as a showcase queen, but it will make odd Plandampf appearances.

Last for this post is an eBay purchase, now fitted with a decoder.  A BR280 from Germany.   This now completes the roster of off-centre cab B-Bs, or at least will when the Class 110 gets its replacement decoder.

There is a Nohab and a BR215 in the next packet together with a BR95 2-10-2T.  All I need to complete the roster with spares is another railbus, though the class 212 or 280 pulling three railbus trailers could be a passenger substitute.

Taking advantage of Kelvin White's liquidation sale- the first batch from him were the BR795 railbus set and the sliding wall vans and railbus trailers.

Next we have a Nohab, in MAV livery but when the Iron Curtain was falling the railways of Eastern Europe were liquidising assets so it is feasible one ended up in the Western part of Germany on this private light railway.  As A1A-A1A types they would be light enough.

20230622_102845.jpg.b31b51f836b8551ff2591dc64c3fb5d3.jpg

It had a Bachmann decoder with it, and despite my dislike of old Bachmann decoders I've used it as the decoder socket is surrounded by quite a lot of bare metal- the Bachmann decoder is encased in blue plastic insulation so doesn't need Kapton tape to protect it.  I'll have to get some special couplings for it but in the meanwhile I've put an old-style coupler back onto one of the Piko wagons to act as a converter.  The Nohab will be rostered for through freight.  Just needs some weathering.

20230622_141855.jpg.cb85f65c71cd83ed03d3653fe7d64238.jpg

Next up from Kelvin an Arnold BR95 which is a little too large for the line, though just about OK on axle load.  It will work passenger in rotation with the BR86 and BR94, with the two tender engines only putting in appearances when there is a Plandampf.  This has a Next18 socket and although not too difficult to dismantle getting the bits of the front to line up when reassembling it wasn't fun.  The vertical boiler handrails down to the cylinders are safely tucked away in the box as I decided I wasn't going to manage to re-fit those...

20230622_141857.jpg.9e4e97ec886cafa5b29cf6f5f65edd7a.jpg

Not the best view of the other end, but it will no doubt appear more as the layout develops.   There was also BR215 diesel ( a class being disposed of by DB about the time of the model.  This is still in its box awaiting a Plux12 decoder I've not yet got round to ordering...

The layout is standing on its end for a  week while Bregenbach goes to Ruddington show.

All for now

  • 2 weeks later...

Back in business after Ruddington show with Bregenbach and a visit to a wet Manchester to see my daughter and granddaughter.

shedwithroof.jpg.045199ed6a91990e2d40f8e6f9fdb0ff.jpg

The shed now has its roof, but no celerestory, doors or chimneys yet.  Note the coal stage under construction next to it.

roadwaywithcars.jpg.ca0c60219e579ef5f7dabe51ef27e5aa.jpg

Also in the pack from Kelvin were some more cars and a digger.  A pair of the cars placed on the road above the tunnel to see if it is actually wide enough.  Slightly on the narrow side but it will work.  I'm thinking of getting some Noch self-adhesive roadway to improve the surface.  More difficult to lay but any joins can be disguised by traffic and rough edges can have pavement or foliage.

morecarsanddigger.jpg.65957fdda1da173e62d2e2f54eca4ce7.jpg

Going slightly round the bend as are most folks these days we see two more of the cars and the digger.  The chimney just visible at the top hides a discontinuity in the backscene.  Wall capping still desperately needed and buffers, ground cover etc etc etc...

stageunderconstruction.jpg.2728b821dae3129b03469dec97fa0902.jpg

Back to the shed with the digger posed for me to decide it looks better somewhere else.  There were two diggers came from Kelvin, the other one is going onto eBay as surplus.  The celerestory won't now be added to the shed- I'm too ham fisted to get the small parts together without breaking them.  So far the chimneys are going together reasonably well- photo when added- but as each chimney is 14 pieces they are best described as fiddly.  Next job is to put in the station platform and roadway at the front so I can do the messy part of the groundwork (plaster bandage) at this side before getting on with bits that would suffer badly if plaster got on them.

As another birthday passes a pair of beer wagons are incoming.  This is the first one, from Mr Simon.  A Tillig wagon with NEM coupler pockets making changing to modern couplings or to Easi-shunts much easier.

A view of the other end coupled to the BR280 after changing the couplings..

reefer2.jpg.66eae075861c0058f7a132e1eb26f18d.jpg

Next building in line is the tall one that is to sit behind the block of flats.  The ground underneath needs firming up and levelling. As the building is a corner block but not 90 degrees I've got to think carefully about the roadway in front of it.

bigbuilding1.jpg.0e4b202e050475580c0f99702a30ef5a.jpg

The gaping corner has now been welded together- the joy of photos that show all the defects...   The roadway might turn through 90 degrees to disappear.  The green area in front will be well endowed with trees.

Looking at it over the top of the flats block- the idea of buildings banking upwards is what I wanted to achieve.

bigbuilding2.jpg.df99d29ce956f1dfecd0f47b3a0deb40.jpg

More can be done on the road surface when I have the buildings sorted out.

I've sent an order to Modellbahn Union for five low-relief buildings to go along the high level road.  They may not be enough and one of them loos a little tall and a little deep.

A little more building work.

chimney.jpg.6d67f0a127f71fd0e076ca2ff0a83f1b.jpg

The chimney base is done- and I've got some extra grey paint to touch over.  This is where it will sit to hide the join in the backscene,  but I'm  hoping to find a smaller building to fit between it and the warehouse as the latter fits the space better further to the left.

firstplatform.jpg.371c181503393cdda965b50298ab362e.jpg

The station building is now under construction- yes it really is that small- it is a private railway after all.  This is the first attempt at putting down a platform and I'm not happy with it.  When I run a passenger train in behind it the platform is too high, almost to UK height.  I'll look to see if I have some thinner Balsa to make it from.

A disaster has struck the tall building.....

roofproblem.jpg.ec2f7918d80155e720fb5afcdfde5d2e.jpg

The pieces for the lower part of the roof were missing from the box.  I've cobbled a set of parts to fit (or as near as I can) out of Redutex but they are darker than the upper half of the roof (which IS in the box).  I'll continue building as it cost too much to throw away, but I'm not best pleased. I'll paint the upper roof to match the lower and apply strategic weathering.   The building is right at the back and the roofline is the highest part of the scenery, which makes this especially annoying.

All for now.  I've already had an email from UPS to say my next lot of buildings are in transit.  I'd better get a shift on....

A little more progress...

fullroof.jpg.0b01e6ca6711e31221db551a95fcf2a2.jpg

The roof of the tall building is now finished apart from the guttering.  More urgent is sorting out the ground so it stands level and working out what to do with the road at this end.  The top of the roof will be repainted to blend in with the lower part.

heights.jpg.9a04e7365ec5c3ed6d59eded5509bc31.jpg

Looking across the layout to the town end showing the layer effect I'm trying to achieve.  I'm not worried about roofs over the top of the backscene.  The scenery on the bit that this faces in the box is low so there isn't a clash.

lowerplatform.jpg.002570bf16d2e24453cc4832ce347b6a.jpg

The station platform has been replaced with a lower one, which will sit nearer rural German platform height.  Testing with a set of coaches is fine, though I've had to take a little off the front edge to allow loco cylinders to pass safely.

No progress yet on the building, which will sit over the board join here.

sheddone.jpg.0b850808ac23e5e91de1a45c6331c052.jpg

Lastly, the engine shed has chimneys, not exactly as in the instructions- each has 13 parts rather than the 17 in the instructions, but putting bands round the circular section was beyond me.  I've used a square section instead.  The smoke vent over the long roof won't be done.  One of the vital support pieces snapped beyond repair while I was trying to glue the main rooftop beam to it.  It has been rebuilt for diesels....

All for now.  The layout will need to be packed up next Sunday to allow me to get Bregenbach sorted for Loughborough Show next month and get a week's holiday in before that happens.  Before then I want the town end good enough to take a photograph for the layout leaflet.

The station building and the toilet block are now painted, and the platform has its card surface with an initial coat of grey paint. platformpainted.jpg.ec18b77ff358cc1dbceb1eb9431a74be.jpg

The station is where it will be sited, astride the board join.  As I'm basically working from the rear corners to the front middle bedding this in might be one of the last jobs to be done.  Weathering also needed here and the ground around can be designed as I know where the station access road comes in.

station2-manner.jpg.70877a70a8d980545c664057179e0f0f.jpg

Closer view of the ladder on the station wall (trusting people) and the "Manner" sign on the toilets- the "Damen" loos are round the other side.  I know this is supposed to be the front of the toilet block but it looks better than the back so is more interesting for the punters.

flatblock2.jpg.b1070f3b124537bc07c5e9389ee83160.jpg

Having finished the station and the shed, the next building in the pile of kits is the other big block for the town centre.  It is a half-relief block by DM Toys/Modellbahn Union and laser-cut.  No issues so far other than it is deeper than the space I'd allocated for it, so construction pics will show it moving up and down the road until I find where it looks best.  The corner block still needs its roof finishing.

chimneybaseandshed.jpg.058c22573ce53704bd745965c8b39c07.jpg

Last for today, I saw this small 3D-printed shed building with lean-to on eBay, one of the myriad of folks making stuff for TT:120.  It was cheap enough to take a punt on and would have been put aside for the next layout if unsuitable.  Exactly what I need to be able to move the barrel roofed warehouse along the road slightly to where it is a bit wider, and still leave the chimney hiding the discontinuity in the backscene.  It will be sited here, though the lean-to might be moved.  I just have to decide what colours to paint it.

The first building on the layout that is not a kit, and only the third structure after the tunnel mouth and the footbridge.  Definitely a constructors scale- all my other layouts have included appropriate buildings recycled from other peoples' layouts and some ready-to- pant buildings.

More soon.

I said that both offspring had raided Gostude's eBay stash and bought me a beer van apiece for my birthday.  Having collected the second one- the right hand one of the pair- from Manchester last week here they are together.

thetwobeervans-.jpg.fe4b12a6da75eefb20beff5d2ba59ec1.jpg

Radeberger now has Easi-shunt couplings as has one end of Torgau.  The other end will be done later but the V180 isn't a shunter and has Tillig couplers at the moment.

fancyflats.jpg.40b4d89ac0d28d1a2df4fbea90f761a5.jpg

The first level of fancy detailing on the front of the block of flats, and an attempt to see if it works further along the road.  I think it might overpower this location.  More thinking needed.

pileofbuildings.jpg.b6af496838cbedecd06514ca04d76058.jpg

Meanwhile lurking round behind the backscene is the pile of unbuilt kits....

The last of the locos bought from Kelvin is the BR215 by Tillig.  Again a little unlikely to have been bought by the Bregtalbahn but as DB were selling off the first of their V160 types around the time the layout was set it isn't impossible.  This now completes the diesel roster.  With the steam roster also full all I really need is another railbus to give a spare.

BR215.jpg.1eddad0bd1172c7d1c810e45d66b0d42.jpg

The front of the loco shows it to be missing a front coupler, which I managed to catch and break of when fitting the decoder- it isn't straightforward working out exactly where to pull to get the body off.  At first I thought I'd done in the rear coupler and was getting ready to program it in reverse.  then I discovered the body fits either way round so the missing coupler is at number 1 end.  It will be rostered on through freight or occasional passenger so it will only really have to run forwards.  There is a fret of detailing parts in the box so it may well get those added to the front.

BR215-2.jpg.6cc20864ce09db8996d9f9f6e4caf256.jpg

Showing the coupler I didn't brak off at number 2 end.  The decoder is a Plux12 variety, and I found it difficult to source.  Eventually I got hold of a Lenz Silver Mini but the loco spent a few weeks sitting in its box waiting for it to arrive.

I've ordered couplings for the NoHab now, and put an extra set in the order as they look as if the NoHab and BR215 have the same coupler type.  If it doesn't fit then I've only wasted about £3, and the couplers will go in the "might come in handy" box.   In the same order there are a couple of bogie open wagons and the first couple of sets of people, together with some wheelsets.

All for now.  Tomorrow is due to be wet so a big building bash in the shed- finish the flats block and start the next house in line- and get some more wall capping done and tidy up some more ballast.

Plenty still to do.

I've now worked out the final position for the big block.  By moving the corner block to the right the road can exit to the right of that, making a cul-de-sac.  It is going to be a bit messy behind the flats block as far as surfacing it but any problems can be hidden.

finalposition1.jpg.2bf7ccffdc0f3ed788f588c405ca08ef.jpg

A low angle view showing the stack from front to rear.  The blocks being here work as far as closing the layout is concerned- the trees along the rear of the layout won't protrude above the backscene top.

finalposition-2.jpg.89a2490ce35ee8f6072e0abe17c41f4c.jpg

The first attempt at getting a level surface didn't wotk, so the substrate here is a bit high, leaving quite a kerb in front of the blocks.  A few parked cars can disguise just how high it is.  I'm going to use Noch roadway along the back.  Joins can have distractors by or on them so it will end up looking good.  This is Noch pavement.  the road will exit the scene to the right of the corner block.  Balconies still to finish and a few minor details on the big block, and the roof top of the corner black still needs a coat of paint.  Then a bit of weathering will be applied to the rooftops, even in the Black Forest they aren't that clean.

finalposition-3pavement.jpg.dad8b30d9afea6549bc8c95cd4fc01b8.jpg

The Noch road surface is in place, with some grotty bits at this end which can't be fixed until the flats block has been bedded in- a bit of chicken-and-egg here as the surface round the block could do with being right before the block is bedded in.  Sadly one stage has to be finished before the other, and it will be easier to bed the block in then sort the problems.

roadsurface1.jpg.c166fc89652a15d4688d8fdfef2bcfac.jpg

Another long-ish day tomorrow, though I'll have to go into town in the morning to visit the Post Office.

Plenty needs doing.

Making progress reasonably quickly, though there is now less than a week before I have to put it away to prepare Bregenbach for Soar Valley show.

resurfacing-1.jpg.4e1f5366786384bf6a3777f014a3cfc1.jpg

The Noch roadway now extends to the board join.  No problems here that I can't disguise with suitable cars.  It looks a little narrow here, so I think the factory over the board join might be a bit optimistic.  I'll build it anyway and worry about it later...

tocorner-1.jpg.6706bda967635c917907f28c2612975b.jpg

The roadway offscene is now in place and works well.  The piazza next to the flats will be re-done when the flats are bedded in, probably with a different paving laid over the top in a bespoke fashion.

Note the top of the corner building roof is now darker so the bodge with Redutex no longer stands out.  One downpipe has escaped the window but is has been located and is waiting to be put back.  Some weathering and matt finishing still to be done here.

wheelchairuserview1.jpg.e91a30fdee23f1ce725d0693df174a4b.jpg

A day later the same location taken from wheelchair user height.  As the layout is about 4 inches nearer the floor than NO PLACE and Bregstadt wheelchair users will get close and personal with the trains.  Another reason for disguising the blemishes....

wheelchairview-2.jpg.10a7292ab79a3f77656867d00fb48010.jpg

Wheelchair user view to the big white block, now stuck down and bedded in.  You can see it is low relief a bit too clearly.  I feel a tree or two coming on, it is the Black Forest after all.  Trees are also needed to take away the direct view through the hole in the backscene.  Time also to build the ends up and paint the inside matt grey to reduce the light from behind.

The list of jobs seems to grow faster than they get ticked off.   A parcel from Modelbahnshop Lippe is imminent, and also a pack of decent trees.

treesinplace-1.jpg.c6d8fd987b14aed347b87e84818d1451.jpg

The three buildings at the back corner are now all bedded in and a few trees planted to hide some of the imperfections.

treesinplace-2.jpg.e228e07fd169566a7894d7bab940ae7c.jpg

Two views looking into te corner- darkening the area behind the backscene has also hidden the view somewhat.  I need to order some more small plywood sheets to finish the top over here, which will darken it further.  On Bregenbach I have a couple of trees just behind the backscene at one point which helped give the impression that it isn't a tunnel the trains are disappearing into.  I'll probably try it here after Soar Valley show- I have about 6 useable weeks to get on with this before a holiday to Iceland and BB and NP going out to two shows each.

flatsbedded.jpg.825e15014192ac8d024ac85f63717854.jpg

The flat block is stuck in place and now has a footpath to the cellar entrances, with a flower border running along in front of it.  Tidying up still to be done at the left end of it.

Work has moved to tidying up the edge of the footpath to the footbridge, and getting the other two buildings of the town done.  The blog is running a couple of days behind at the moment, so a lot more has been done but the next batch of pics are still in the camera.

More to follow.  Hopefully there will be a couple of views good enough to make a layout flier before I pack away on Sunday.

Penultimate day of building before the layout is packed away for three weeks.

Still playing catch-up with the pics but I've also been getting a video done.  the good news is that I've also got a pair of useable pictures for a layout flier.  The flier will be put together next week so I have some to give out at Loughborough in a couple of weeks time.

entrees.jpg.bdd94ad6e679a318dc600c8ca4c13ac3.jpg

The first set of trees don't really hide the hole in the backscene, so there will need to be tidying up there as well as a couple of trees behind which can be seen through the hole.  A bit of touching up to be done on the bridge.

The nearest trees have been sprayed with matt varnish and dipped in flock powder to improve them from the basic bog brush.  The ones to go in front of them will also have the bottom branches and the ground under them made more dead with some brown scatter.

houses4and5.jpg.f88bfd2522440cfdd90dddcca995196f.jpg

Houses four and five of the town.  The two I'd bought to extend the town are too deep so I'll put a couple of judicious trees to hide the gap between house and backscene and make green space.  The factory for further along is too deep but after some thought I can reduce its depth from 45mm to 25mm.

Again here some cars, people and shrub tubs can hide the problems with the pavement.

nochroaddone.jpg.20d0296ac90d6391f994b4b36d60e8d4.jpg

The other end is still rather bare and a bit out of focus in this pic, but the Noch roadway now extends the full length of the scenic area and with the edges bedded in properly and cars etc hiding joins between strips it will look good when finished.  One tip is to always lay overlaps so the front piece rides over the top of the one behind it.  That hides the join from the direct frontal view and makes the view blockers and distractors have to work that little bit less hard.

stationrooms1.jpg.45c6d5846233fdfdda39c0aaf13ed1e7.jpg

The two main station buildings are in their final place though not bedded in.  The "Frauen" sign on the ladies' can be made out.  The little waiting room for the other platform is under construction, not that there will be all that many times when two passenger trains cross here.   Grass tufts in the background- these particular ones from Amazon came with a very nice pair of tweezers but aren't self-adhesive.

NOHabonshed.jpg.105dc0393e43223ce79486cdaaaf83db.jpg

Last for today, in the box of goodies from Modellbahnshop Lippe, as well as some wheels for a parcels van I'm building, the first of the figures (including the signature peeing dog) and a couple more Enaos bogie wagons the couplings for the NoHab have arrived.  The grotty area in front of it here is the next area to be tackled to make a presentable foreground for the flier pics.

Still more to show, but not tonight.

Last day of work before packing up- and almost up to date with the photos.  Only two more pre-dismantling pics to come, these showing an overview of everything fixed down.  These are still in the camera.  The video is also done and the two pics for the first layout flier are picked.

BR94ontrain.jpg.47a0dc452480db4cd678e322729b3de3.jpg

BR94 arrives with vintage passenger train.  The area around the shed has been levelled and painted brown (shame it dried glossy but it was the only pot I had in stock) read for the static grass.

juidicioustrees.jpg.9bc4e9ea757acdadcd0e311c5fcb9306.jpg

A pair of judicious trees hide the fact that the low relief buildings are actually centimetre forward of the backscene.  The paving beside the flats still need relaying and some parked cars and people will disguise the dodgy levels in front of the buildings.  Residents would have cars even though through traffic would be limited, the main road being presumed to be offstage behind the layout somewhere.

factoryone.jpg.681db7c32f261ffec306f91b95716abe.jpg

I've made a start on the low relief factory- progress will be very slow as everything involving depth has to be reduced to 26mm in depth from the original 52mm.  The doorway at this end of the building has been bricked up and there will be a small yard at the far end, after which a digger will be making a hole for another block to be built.  There will be a vehicle placed on the road over the board join, removable as will be the factory.  the layout name will sit immediately above the factory to finish disguising the two joins in the backscene.

BR94onshed-flier1.jpg.080a0f6f0064dab4f638f7d5d512f69d.jpg

Moving on, the BR94 has retired to the shed now the static grass is laid here.  With a little cropping of the foreground this will be used in the MK1 version of the layout flier.  Naturally better photos will replace the two on Mark 1 as building the layout progresses.

BR280pastshed-flier2.jpg.8847930a35884b9d966c5404dc755001.jpg

Moving on, the BR280 passes the shed on its way towards Furtwangen.  This is a better photo despite the slightly dodgy foreground photo in that clangers are harder to pick up.  I think this will be the main pic for the flier.

The layout is now boxed up and standing on end.  I've added a drop wire on the run-round loop on the tunnel board, as ballasting the line seems to have lost a connection at the fishplate immediately beyond the point.  If that is the only electrical casualty of ballasting I'll be very grateful.

Last pics of this spasm to follow, with the link to the latest video.

The last two pics are still in the phone (not the camera- that would have been too easy!)

However, here is the video I threatened promised.  Speeds and acceleration are too high to avoid stalling on bits of surplus ballast that locos find but I can't always see to chop away.  They will be dealt with next time up.

The pics will follow at some point.  Meanwhile the layout is packed up and Bregenbach is on the shed floor with some spiders evicted from the underside and stuff being assembled for Loughborough.

  • 4 weeks later...

The layout is set up again, until the middle of October when it needs to be taken down to allow NO PLACE to be readied for Hinckley show.

Running today there seems to be a shortage of serviceable railcars as the morning train to Donaueschingen has a Class 215 pulling three Ferkeltaxe trailers, which haven't even had the railway's crest applied over the DR on the sides.  The morning goods is light enough for the 08 (bought at scrap value from British Rail) to handle the train.  Nothing for the goods yard here this morning.

More pics showing progress when the glue sets and the paint dries- I've been working on that expanse of ground behind the station and between the shed and the goods yard.

Some of the latest scenics.

firstEasterntrees.jpg.22119d6cffca7344efe067ad6136cdfe.jpg

First trees have gone in at the Eastern end of the layout over the tunnel.  These take time as every tree I've found that is a decent shape and size has had to have a lot of work done on the colour.  There will also be some trees in front of the road- how many depends on the number of quality trees I can afford.

firsttowntrees.jpg.0e79c384eecf1be80d61fe96fc306f96.jpg

Also the first trees have gone in between the shed and the town- different species mostly for this area but the same remarks about quality and finish apply.  The one in front of the flats has yet to have the ground around it worked on to hide the plastic roots.

shedaug2523.jpg.fda2514ef536461515146c8d24b41a71.jpg

The area around the shed has had the ground cover extended.  A lot more work to do here but it is better than varnished plywood....

groundcover1.jpg.602a68e3cff751c42bf21374aecc1f93.jpg

Having abandoned the idea of having a second platform - a halt this size wouldn't have two platforms - the area between the running lines would now be just unused space- most likely in more affluent time there would have been flower beds here, though they could still be added.groundcover2.jpg.31e12ac0c106a1ca31e51d771e77a739.jpg

A different angle of the same area.  Mr Simon has paid a visit today to retrieve his dog from his holiday here, and suggested that as there is a dip in the ground level here, a large puddle/small pond to the right would be a good idea.  That seems a good possibility.  the unstarted area behind will be grassed, with bushes and a path from the cobbled area to the shed.  Not a road as all supplies will be brought in by rail.

paving1.jpg.a5360f2c8287e309387d22ecba79c1a5.jpg

Last for now, the cobbled access from the ramp to the concrete goods standing has now been laid in.  Again no work yet done to blend it in, but it is there.  The goods transfer warehouse is now stuck down on the extended concrete standing.  Next is to look on the DM Toys website for appropriate fencing for the edge of the apron.  The area around can now get its basic grass covering.

Plenty done but a lot to do.  How long to April 6th (less time needed to prepare the other layouts for 4 shows and the annual holiday)?

  • 2 weeks later...

the pond progresses.  One complete jar of Gloss Cote tipped in.  Mind you it is doing a good job of changing the colour of the grass around it....

More of this when it finally dries the same colour as in the pic (taken while it is still wet...)

Another video.

The Ferkeltaxe arrives heading up the valley to Furtwangen and is crossed by the BR290 on Eaos wagons heading for Donaueschingen.  Must weather the wagons.  Finally the BR86 pauses on its way East with the vintage train.

All still a little wobbly and jerky- I'm still juggling a Powercab in one hand and the phone in the other.  At least it gives an impression of the work that has been going on with the ground cover.

All for tonight

  • 1 month later...

Hi Les,

Just discovered your layout and have enjoyed catching up reading on the progress / construction.

Thanks for sharing,  it's a superb little railway you have.

I had a 3x6' TT layout when I was a teen,  BTTB stock etc...Went British O scale and enjoyed building the typical Branch terminus.

However with the new Hornby line of TT models,  it jogged my memory of how much fun that first  layout was,  and I'm heading

back to TT to build a new version of it.  So Hornby has gotten another TT convert with me.   It is a superb scale for a compact railway.

Looking forward to seeing more developments of Bregstadt.

Felix

A clip of my first railway.
