froobyone
Hi all, Progress on the layout has been slow his week. I'm busy updating all of my kit instructions to CAD drawings and developing a new kit for TT. Possibly. It's the least interesting building I've done so far and as such, I'm not sure if they'll sell well. Having said that, I thought that about the truss bridge too and I sold one the moment I posted about it on FB. So we'll see. What I did manage to do was start the ballasting/painting of track. I'd remembered that I hated ballasting and therefore was really surprised to find that I hated even more than I remembered! Not only do I hate it but I don't even think it looks nice. It'll get a waft of airbrush when it's all done, sometime in 2068. I don't even want to post a pic of the ballasting, it shames me. I will though, because I've only got two other pics. Hopefully I'll have a more productive week. Oh and if you're wondering what the large syringe is for, I though heroin would help with the ballasting. It didn't, it just soaked into the ballast and starting singing Doors songs. Bye for now. Dan
froobyone
Hi all My week has been mostly spent ballasting. I've only got the station area left to do and also the areas with the turnouts to allow the fitting of point motors when I find the courage. I've also developed some trackside speed signs which I might sell. I'll add pics and you kind people can let me know if there would be any interest. I still have to weather the ballast, for which I'll employ the airbrush and hopefully that will tie it all together, because I still don't like how it looks. Sorry for boring ballast pics. froobyone
As the famous song once said, what a difference a spray makes... Gave a section of track a tickle with the airbrush this afternoon. Some scat brown and dark brown/black where oil has accumulated over the decades. There are some spots of ballast that need a fettle/filling but overall it's going in the right direction for me. The finish is a bit sheeny for my taste, so when it's all done I may put a flat coat on it. I celebrated with a little running session. Blink Bonny seemed chuffed with the changes. The gronk was camera shy however. Next job/test will be filling in between the lines with grass and mud. It'll be a test because I've never done anything like that before, so it could all go horribly wrong... Until next time Dan
froobyone
Hi all, Had some fun this weekend adding DAS clay to the rough ground areas between the running lines. I've never worked with clay before, but I successfully managed not to make a vase or summon the spirit of a dead loved one... I have to patiently wait 24 hours before painting, but that's fine, as I've got to wait for some flock to arrive anyway. I will be using static grass, but if the internet can tell you anything, it's put some scatter down first. Due to the fact that I'm doing all this on a super tight budget, because I can't afford to advertise my model kits in the break during Coronation Street, I'm having to do a lot of things manually, that I would otherwise throw money at. For instance, to use my airbrush without a compressor involved a lot of deep breaths. I'm joking of course, I got the missus to do it. I needed a steady hand. One of the main unaffordable costs was going to be trees. So I thought I'd have a go at the wire twist method. I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. It looks like Jimmy Saville at the moment... I'll have a better idea when I've given it a waft of paint. Plus some extra fine leaves and it may save me some money, or cause me to be pilloried the length and breadth of the land. Not unlike Jimmy. Don't ask me what kind of tree it is. Dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a botanist! Until I do something else stupid. Dan

I am no tree expert but I would day that there is a bit of an 'oak tree vibe' going on. Like the way the roots sit on the DAS clay. froobyone
Thank you both. I did have an oak in my mind when it started to come together, more by luck than by judgement. Roots still need a bit of work before I'm fully happy with them. Tomorrow I will be trying to texture the trunk with some crackle. Let's see if my luck holds out. Thanks again Dan

froobyone
15 minutes ago, Railpassion said: What are you using for the greenery on the tree? It's actually some loose stuff that fell off a bunch of cheap trees I got off Amazon a while ago. They were awful, hence me trying to make my own. I'll probably strip the rest of them for future trees of this type. I'd drop a link to them in case you wanted to do the same, but they're no longer available it seems. Sorry, that probably wasn't much help. Best Dan
froobyone
Hi all, Did my first attempt at static grass today. What an absolute delight. Managed to mildly electrocute myself, obviously, but apart from that it went swimmingly. I did make a rookie mistake of not vacuuming the overspill before I sprayed my glue mix on the first section, but I think I've mostly got away with it. I'm very excited about the countryside section now, which I'd been nervous about. I'll drop a few pics in. Obvious caveats apply. Never done it before. Fully colour-blind. An idiot. froobyone
Hi all, Layout work has been delayed momentarily while I design a small engineering building. I'll post pics of the first prototype, but it's very rough. Some fitment issue and very roughly painted to give me some ideas. I've also finished the weathering on the wrong era brake van, vent vans and TTA. Making sure to clean away where the numbers are. I've also started work on another tree. I wanted to try a different technique, so this time I used DAS clay on a twisted wire base. Then a base coat of brown, followed by some Vallejo crackle medium. Once this was dry I then airbrushed a dirty white over it and waited for it to crack. I'm trying to get a birch tree look, but I think it would be just as effective with shades of brown. I'll try that next time. Have a great May day weekend all and good luck with any and all modelling. Best Dan 5
froobyone
Hi all. Small update. I finished my second tree. Quite pleased how it came out. I particularly like the bark. I've also painted and weathered the tiny forklift. However, I was not happy with the small building I was planning on having as an engineering unit. It doesn't have the impact that I was hoping for. I did think about just making it bigger, but I still didn't feel like it was the right decision. I had a good think about what the area could be and I've decided a fuel transfer point might make an interesting thing to model. This solves a couple of problems. 1) Not having any era correct goods wagons. 2) TTA Wagons are available. 3) It'll be interesting to look at. 4) I can 3D print a lot of the infrastructure. So now it's a case of looking at reference photos until a find something I like. That's all for now. Dan
TT100 Diesels
Love the second tree especially the crackle bark effect. Crisp weathering on the wagons and also great paint and weathering on the fork truck. I have the same fork truck and found painting it a real challenge. Cheers TT 100

The forklift was challenging as was getting the driver in! It's the one side of things that I'm struggling with. Trains and track are fine, but it's the small things that are now really small. For example, because I'm setting Woodburn in around 1985/86 my Blue Grey HST needs exhaust deflectors and despite the train set imagery showing deflectors, none of the the twin packs I've seen have them. So I modelled one to 3D print with my FDM printer. It was almost too thin to print. I know I wouldn't have these problems if I had a resin printer. But I bought HST power cars instead... Priorities. Thanks again for your kind words. Best Dan

Following you on this thread as interested in creating a TT120 layout myself . Whilst it is true that my old man eyes have needed help with seeing, the sheer scope of what can be accomplished has kept me committed. I hope you make the jump to TT as it's been really great seeing what people are doing with the scale and it would be nice to see another player in the game. froobyone
Hi all, I finalised the logistics building design today and built it up. Despite it now not being the centre piece, it will still have a home in Woodburn. I will use it as a small distribution point for a local logistics company -should I ever get a lorry or in fact any vehicle you can't drive on a learner licence... I also wasted a bunch of time designing something I can't use. Let me explain. Over the last 5 months, I've been watching tons of videos on YouTube of UK cab views. Whilst there are a few from the period I'm modelling, there are a greater number of modern image ones. I watch them anyway, because you never know where inspiration will come from. However, I've watched so many modern image ones, that I became convinced that I wanted TPWS grids. So I spent hours designing, cutting, redesigning, fighting the laser kerf and fighting backlash until I finally had something that would successfully cut at 1:120 scale. Only after reaching this goal did a little voice in my head speak up and say "Hey, when did TPWS grids actually start being used?" To which I answered "Oh, that's a good point". I checked, phew what a relief. They started being used 13 years AFTER my modelled period. FML. In other news, TT:120 TPWS grids for sale, for everyone modelling post 1999 who isn't an idiot. 10 for 7 quid... Next week I'm going to build the maglev they didn't have in 1986! TT100 Diesels
Wow, the logistics depot looks real crisp, and I love the fork lift bimbling up the ramp! Shame the TPWS grids did not work out era wise because they also look fab. There are still AWS magnets in the track, or do Westhill wagon works do them? Your overall layout progress seems to be coming on in leaps and bounds lately, keep up the great work. Cheers TT100 Diesels

I'm going to try and laser cut some first and see how they turn out. My next major job is ballasting the sidings, but I'm having a break from bending over and squinting at things for a day or so. I've got to come up with a plan for the Esso fuel store, so I'll sit at my PC and try some ideas out. Thanks again and I look forward to developments at High Peak Junction. Dan Geeeteck printer around 100quid bargain..some first gen anycubics quite cheep too ...its the other bits and bobs you end up needing that cost.....I bought one as seemed a shame to power up the big boy for little prints....its back in its box as it doesn't support lychee slicer that's taken me 2 years to master only uses Chitubox slicer ..I'm a slow learner!....but saying that I'm printing a foot bridge for a local club layout and my laptop has launched its teddy out and says I don't have a graphics card on board! Must have as I've printed footsteps!🤨....local Internet down as well so it's all gone pete tong....Time for a early bed Layout looks mint by the way G
