Industrial designer Raymond Loewy designed the look of the very large Pennsylvania duplex 6-4-4-6 (with 8-axle tender). The model is by Lionel in 1:48.

  • sncf231e changed the title to 0 Gauge Pennsylvania Duplex S1 - The longest locomotive ever
  • RMweb Gold

The S1 was unofficially clocked over 140mph multiple times, there was a claimed top speed of 156 reached on one occasion. With 7ft driving wheels and northwards of 6500hp it is quite possible the S1 managed to reach those speeds.

The lessons learned from the S1 were used to build the T1 class, the last steam locos built for the PRR. There is currently a new T1 being built (5550), which if they decide to go ahead with the record attempt will finally put the rumors of their top speed to bed.
