Recommended Posts

A quick post for today's diorama-a-day as I need to get out.

Midge from Crewe Works 18" gauge railway, 3D printed

And the printed diorama - very much an early trial for me for this approach

Hopefully a little more later ...

Some images of the prototype 'spider bridge' at Crewe to support my much simplified diorama.

From the station end, looking through the signal box 'tunnel'.

"The bridge itself was a foot bridge that ran from the Old Works to the Railway Station with the inclusion of the tramway, this allowed spare parts to be transferred from the works to the Station for onward transport to wherever they were needed on the network. "

There is an interesting book on the Crewe NG system from the LNWR Society.

Of course the L&YR Horwich works had a similar NG railway system, but no spider bridge. Those two works in Nortthern England are well known, but a careful study of old maps (e.g. at NLS) will show that many (most?) works had internal NG railways. St Rollox and Cowlairs were examples in Glasgow, while Wolverton had a system until comparatively recently. The difference is that most did not use NG locos.

A side-on view of the forced perspective diorama, showing the relationship between the larger version of 'Midge' (which used Hornby wheel sets) and the smaller edition on the 'spider bridge'.

3D printing makes it straightforward to do a 'Honey I shrank the Kids Loco' exercise.
