NE J72 livery

Recommended Posts

I am just completing a makeover on a ex-Mainline J72 with a P4 chassis, detailing & new handrails etc. usual stuff. I want to represent it in immediate pre War2 livery, circa 1936 but so far can't find any reference (I don't normally model the NE so my library and knowledge is limited) the loco is going to be No. 1746 built at Darlington in 1898 and for all its working life was based at York. The only photos I have found of her and her sisters are in BR livery, or 'restored' NER green.

My basic question is: I know they were painted plain black, but did the letters LNER appear on the tank sides above the number, or were these humble engines limited to number only?

Further to above

Small Yellow shaded lettering and numbers as per this one below . Red lining finished in 1928 so yours may or may not be lined , you need photos to confirm. Plain Black is easiest. HMRS do the decals

One final query: if the loco is in unlined black, would it have plain (i.e unshaded) lettering? I'm assuming so since this seems to be the case on other plain black LNER locos.
