RMweb Premium Dalesman Posted October 3, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 3, 2010 I visited the American National Railway Museum last May and did a photo survey of 60008 which emigrated there over 40 years ago. At least it is now indoors. I've uploaded my pictures to Flickr at: www.flickr.com/photos/27874750@N04/sets/72157625088389950/with/5048719790/ Cut & paste the link into your browser. RMweb Premium ArthurK Posted October 3, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 3, 2010 I visited Green Bay in (I think) 1976. 60008 was in the middle of a very dark shed. I have a couple of photos but they are not good. Also there were a couple of English Pullmans which I believe were left after the near diasterous tour of "Flying Scotsman". I will dig them out. They are slides so that I will have to scan them in. There was plenty of other things of interest from the other side of the pond including Ike's coach an ex LNER coach. RMweb Premium ArthurK Posted October 4, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2010 As Promised a few photos from Green Bay Wisconsin, date March 1979 As I said the lighting was apalling but I managed just a few. Conditions out side was to say the least very bright and full sun so the contrast was very apparent. First a view of the Museum itsel. Next the Nameplate of 60008 Two views of 60008. This was the best that I could do in the conditions. Behind 60008 were two LNER coaches. Eisenhower used an LNER coach as his operations room whilst in Europe. I am not sure if it was one of these but I do have a photo of his desk. Sticking outside of the shed was this Steel Pullman. Sorry I cannot rember if this was named. Of couse things are always bigger over there and they don't come any bigger than this. Union Pacific "Big Boy" X4017. I had difficulty getting this all in the shot! Now for something completely different. A rock Island streamlined Deisel looking far too big for its train standing behind Thats all for now folks. RMweb Premium Dalesman Posted October 4, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2010 Hi Arthur! The Pavilion is still there, there is a colection of passenger cars, freight cars and steam locos hidden in the still dark interior. The Big Boy is next to the A4 in the newer building alongside some Pullman cars and an ex-SNCF wagon donated under the "Merci Train" Chris
craigwelsh
It really looks wrong to see the motion on the steam locos painted silver, almost like a cheap plastic model rather than the nice bare metal finish. At least its in a nice new building now though.
RMweb Premium BR60103 Posted October 5, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 5, 2010 The RI diesel is from the "Aerotrain". a GM experiment that failed. The coach set was based on bus bodies and articulated. There was model issued in the last couple of years (and on by Varney is the late '50s). The coaches behind it are not related and possibly couldn'r be coupled. Interesting note: 3 of the preserved A4s are in sequence: 8,9 and 10. And still with the final numbers. RMweb Premium ArthurK Posted October 5, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 5, 2010 Nice to see a bit of interest in my photos. I used up a couple of films that day. Let me know if you would like to see a few more. I have closeups of the motion of X4017 and others. Arthur
RMweb Premium Kris Posted October 5, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 5, 2010 That aero train looks fantastic. The chrome bar on the top does look a little like a roof rake though.
