It's now out and available from the usual bookshops, selected mag racks and on line from the likes of Amazon.

The cover price for this book is ??16.99 but I got my copy from Amazon at just under ??10 (40% discount?). This may seem a lot compared to a normal magazine purchase but i suspect that the higher cost is due to a number of factors including:

  • There are no adverts in the 127 page book to offset production costs
The book is just that, a book, produced using high quality paper and a hard back cover.
The circulation will be lower than a normal magazine

The contents are as follows:

A welcome editorial from Mike Wild

10 pages on a Southern Withered Arm OO layout called Treneglos (Mike's done a great job of photographing our layout)

10 pages on Mike's construction of an Midland Region layout in two weeks

8 pages summarising the real BR Clan 4-6-2s

6 pages on a small N gauge shed layout called Putnam Depot

12 pages showing Chris Nevard's view on the top 10 photos he's taken for HM (Some great shots too - even better on the quality paper used in this book)

8 pages of a OO layout called Devon Cliffs which represents the ex GWR line near Dawlish (strong hints of Holiday Haunts)

Then on to show you how type articles:

6 pages of James Lavery creating a snow scene

6 pages of James Lavery using a Dapol kit to build a country pub

6 pages of Phil Parker using the Silver Fox kit to build the Ex SR 10203 diesel

6 pages of James Lavery building and improving the ratio water tower kit

10 pages describing Mike's own Bay Street 2 layout

8 pages of Evan Green Hughes looking at the real GWR 4-6-0 Castle locos

8 pages looking at the two HM layout of the year winners - Dewsbury Midland and Fenchurch Cutting

10 pages reviewing the main manufacturers releases month by month over the last year

7 pages looking at the Ormesbury Hall MRG's layout Pilmoor - but running with BR steam diesel transition period stock not the usual 1930's LNER.

In summary, this is a good addition to the book shelf and i hope it does well. It's good to see that a high percentage of the content has been written specifically for this book and is not recycled articles from the magazine - what a difference good quality paper and printing makes to layout photos.

I'm sure though that most of the discussion will be about the cover price with many saying it is too high for them to purchase. At the end of the day though it's up to each person as to whether they want to buy it or not.

Got mine from Smith's but ??11.99 there.

Great hardback book, no ads and plenty of interest and Quality pics for the price of less than 3 Mags!

Not read it all yet, should last me a good while and well worth keeping for when I need inspiration!

Well done Mr Wild

Cheers

Stu

I got mine from Ian Allan in London and paid full whack. Still, must help support the specialist shops...

Overall, I think it's a good read during long winter evenings. I especially enjoyed the extended article on Bay Street Mk2. Looks like a fun layout to operate. And yes, there's some good photography in there too. Recommended.
