Steve K
I read that BBC article earlier today, and it was most interesting. For those who haven't clicked the link, it concerns the Madeira-Mamore Railway, or "Devil's Railway", built at great human cost to transport rubber from the centre of the South American landmass to the coast. It's now in a dilapidated state, having been left unused for years, though moves are now afoot to preserve or restore at least some of what remains.
