Evening

From what I remember Original Network Southeast livery was launched in June 1986. So I guess you could have some NSE class 50's but most would still be Large logo's. It depends how authentic you want to be. Its your layout so why not have a selection of livery's and increase your class 50 fleet.

Loco hauled passenger services to/from Newquay finished on 3rd October 1987 (50046 on the morning Paddington, 50036 on the morning Newcastle and 47459 on the Manchester plus a few more services in the afternoon - a thoroughly miserable day for weather).

Class 50s started to be painted NSE in 1986 as already stated so during the summer of 1987 there were 14 Class 50s in old style NSE (50002, 50017, 50018, 50019, 50023, 50025, 50026, 50029, 50032, 50034, 50035, 50037, 50044 and 50048), 50050 came out in the new style in the August followed by 50028 in the September, 6 Class 50s in Large Logo with black roofs (50014, 50024, 50027, 50043, 50046 and 50047), 1 in GWR green (50007) and 25 in Large Logo with grey roofs - total 48. 50011 was withdrawn 24 Feb 1987, 50006 was withdrawn 20 July 1987. Both of these (and 50002, 50028 and 50044 before being repainted NSE) were in Large Logo with black roofs.

So a good mix all round.

Edit: Just to clarify 50008 and 50042 also had black roofs until repainted with grey ones by Doncaster in 1986.

Hornby's 50048 is in the old style with angled stripes at each end and white cab window frames. Their 50002, 50028 and 50045 are in the newer style without the angled stripes and blue cab window frames.

I'd have thought an old NSE model would be ideal but not the newer version. I think the price of 50048 has come down too.

just had a look through one of my books on the westcountry and have theres a pic of a 50 with both types of coaching stock i have so theres the stock sorted

The rakes tended to be long ones (about ten coaches) because they had arrived from Paddington, Newcastle and Manchester. The Manchester and the afternoon train to Wolverhampton were both air-con (mixed Inter City and Blue and Grey), the morning Paddington was NSE Mark 1s and the Newcastle was Blue and Grey Mk 1s.

One good thing is that the DMUs were Skippers (Chocolate and Cream Pacers, 142s) which could easily have failed during the day. A loco on 3 coaches could have occurred on a local service, I've never seen a photo of that happening but why should that stop you. The coaches would have been more likely to be Mark 1s and indeed the local services to Penzance from Plymouth were five Mark 1s and a loco until the next summer.

Class 47s could easily have turned up and Class 37s were used on the china clay traffic (as were Class 50s). The best book to get is 'The Newquay Branch and its Branches' by John Vaughan published by O.P.C. It's got photos from about the early 1950s up to about 1990.

Any more questions please ask.

My visit in June 1987 saw 50046 (Large logo blue /w black roof) and 50019 (Original NSE) on the branch, both on Mk1 rakes. 50019 had a full NSE rake including a BG. Also a plain blue 47 (don't recall the number) on an full I/C rake of Mk2s.

50007 in GW Green was a Laira loco at the time, and regularly appeared in Cornwall, as did the green 47/4s.

I think 50149 got it's Railfreight repaint just after the end of the summer timetable, so didn't coexist with loco-hauleds to Newquay. The other two liveries that don't fit the date are plain BR blue (the last one repainted in 1984), and the final variants of NSE with the darker blue, which appeared around 1990.
