It was more than that, as D5835 in April 1962 it was fitted with an intercooled Mirrlees JVS12T engine producing 2000hp and was tested on a number of type 4 express passenger diagrams.

31302 was always something of a celebrity with me and my mates whenever it turned up around our patch near Shipley, the extra grilles being noticed fairly early on even as young trainspotters.

Hi,

The description of the extra grills on Mr Porter's photo would be highly unlikely as behind those grills at no. 2 end are the exhausters, the radiators being located at no. 1 end. These extra grills are purely for the extra air that was required the turbos due to the higher boost pressure.

I fondly remembered D5835 in the sixties but it was not until the nineties that I realised it had two extra grilles, although I knew it was 2000hp because Ian Allan said so!

Quite easy to model as the Hornby grilles are seperate items and not moulded into the main bodyshell. Anyway a couple pictures of it in original green livery.
