1980s TPO formations at Edinburgh Waverley

Waverley West

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I'm currently in the process of weathering a few TPO vehicles and associated mail vans and would appreciate any information anyone has on TPO train formations from 1980'ish through to 1990'ish. I've seen a few photos of TPO vehicles tacked onto passenger trains but I can't recall ever seeing a photograph of a full TPO formation from the 80s.

Also, did the formations change through the 80s or stay the same? I have a few blue/grey TPO vehicles and some Royal Mail red TPOs for the second half of the 80s, so am looking to recreate both ends of the decade.

Any information anyone has or places to look for such information would be very gratefully received!

Cheers,

Dave

I thought for a second that I wasn't going to find any TPO workings to the west of Waverley but I have found some!

The 22.15 Edinburgh - Carstairs (1C86) in 1987 which was the 21.45 Edinburgh - Carstairs (1C86) in 1982 has a 1982 formation of:

BG, POS, 2 x GUV (all vacuum brake). The train is still listed as vacuum brake in the 1987 working timetable.

The sorting van arrived on the 03.34 Carstairs - Edinburgh (1G06 in 1982, 1B85 in 1987). The rake for 1982 was:

2 x POS, BG

The leading sorting van was then attached to the 04.56 (MO) or 09.19 (MSX) Parcels to Glasgow P.S (parcels station at Salkeld St.) in 1982. In 1987 there was a 05.15 Parcels to Glasgow Central so the same may have happened.

I know the Carstairs - Aberdeen TPO did not change at all in those five years so the other trains may well have been the same.

The West Coast TPOs tended to go to Glasgow or via Mossend to Perth and Aberdeen.

As regards the East Coast rakes in 1987 there was only the 19.16 Kings Cross - Aberdeen Postal (1S37) which was formed of GUVs and BGs but did use a courier van for the post to Edinburgh (detached with some other vans there). The four remaining parcels vans to Aberdeen worked back to Edinburgh on the 10.40 Aberdeen - Edinburgh with 4 x FO, BG from one of the overnight sleeper rakes. These parcels vans then departed with the rest of the parcels rake on the 20.35 Edinburgh - Kings Cross Postal (1E35).

In 1982 there was the 20.15 Kings Cross - Edinburgh Postal (1S66) and the 22.30 Kings Cross - Edinburgh Postal (1S72) both formed 2 x BG, 1 x POS. These are both described as working back on the 20.25 but that working is not listed for Edinburgh or Glasgow.

I've used the old code of POS for a sorting van. A stowage van would be POT and a brake stowage van BPOT. Hope you understand all this and it's of some use.

21-22/11/1981 at Doncaster, not sure if they went to Edinburgh, but they might help you:

47012 (Haymarket loco) northbound 2315 with 4200 15448 15644 35405 81007 81070 80335 80422 80670

47431 (York loco) northbound 0108 with 16263 26513 4399 25818 4713 35248 81334 80364 80322 80363 80434

Was there overnight and didn't see any full TPO trains (or the southbound ones corresponding to those above).

Similar overnight Doncaster on 11-12/6/1982:

47420 (Gateshead loco) northbound 2314 with 4050 4090 4710 35415 81566 80635 80335 80434 80535

47263 (Stratford) northbound 0113* with 4099 4863 4866 26211 44884 35396 81012 80336 80323 80365 80432

and again, there overnight and no southbound postal vehicles or full TPO trains noted.

As for the destinations of the above trains, I don't have a timetable for 1981/2, but the 1978 timetable has

2015 KX-Edinburgh with seats/no sleepers, due Doncaster 2310, and Edinburgh 0430

2330 KX-Edinburgh with seats/no sleepers, due Doncaster 0115, and Edinburgh 0616

*sorry, was a typo 1013

Thanks guys. This is brilliant info. Love the idea of 2 x 27s or an 87 on one BG. Super power.

Any more info anyone has would be very welcome too! Just a dirty wash left to do on the bodysides of the coaches now and then they're ready for playtime. :D

Cheers,

Dave
