RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 14, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2011 I bought a Bachmann LNER unfitted 'High Steel' at Doncaster yesterday and although it is a very good model there are a few things that could be done to improve it. The first of the problems is the lack of interior door detail, the second is the buffers, they are the correct length for a fitted vehicle and the shape is terrible. the next is the lack of steel plates below the doors that fix the body to the solebar. These wagons may have had rope rings in the floor but have not seen any photos of the floor. Buffers are from Lanarkshire Model Supplies - B003, They should be the ones with the lip on the top of the housing but the underframe is slightly shorter than the body. On the next one I do I may add a thin strip of plastic on the headstocks to make up for this. Original buffers. Replacement Buffers. The door detail was scribed, the vertical line for the side of the door was straight forward. The planks were going to be a bit tricky. I got round this problem by using a 90 degree scriber held in a tool makers clamp. The scriber was set using the planks on the outside then the clamp was run along the top of the wagon body with the point scribing the plank. Bolt heads were added with dots of superglue. The body brackets were made from pieces of 80thou x 20thou Evergreen plastic strip. The body is now glued to underframe so these brackets will not get damaged. The wheels have been replaced with Gibson 3 hole discs. One more alteration that needs to be done is to move the brake lever guide out a bit, it should be standing proud of the body side by about 1mm. The finished wagon ready for the paint to be touched up.
Markeg
Looks good, like the interior detail. My wagon is on its way from UK to Australia and I will have a go at this. Thanks for showing us how its done. I might buy some more when I am in UK in April-May. Will be visiting Whitby and the Magpie cafe for 'the best Fish & Chips in the UK' according to Rick Stein. Pete Piszczek
Very nice work! I really like the 90 degree scriber tool. I may have to cobble up something similar...
