If this is the N gauge brick one then indeed it is moulded with a brick pattern. I don't think it would be easy to rub it down smooth without damaging the top coping, but you could possibly rub some filler over it to fill the joints, or stick some thin Plastikard on top of the pattern.

As Edwin has said it is rough, however the plastic is quite soft so with some fine sandpaper you could soon remove the bricks. There are a couple of steps before the copping stones so with a bit of care these could be avoided. I do however think that the filler idea is easier.

The whole lot is indeed a brick(ish) colour for the brick ones. You need to paint the coping stones grey and the white line is probably most easily added before the edges are stuck down. There is a product available to paint the sides of rusty rails and I wonder if it would do this too?
