RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted April 12, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 12, 2011 Obvious - isn't it? One of Coventry's finest, driven with a little too much brio, has come to the attention of the chaps in blue, and a stiff telling off and wallet-raid are in prospect? Err, no. That bike has its engine turned off. Off to the left is another gendarme - in urgent discussion with a couple of locals about the location of the nearest Total filling station! The bikes were part of the escort for a classic rally, currently in swing in France. They had left Paris this morning, and no doubt the bikes were getting a bit twitchy about fuel. As most people in country areas buy cheap fuel at the supermarket, branded filling stations are few and far between. The rally includes impossibly exotic cars - I have never seen Porsche prototypes on the road before, yet there were rare & valuable 904, 906 and 907 models to be seen. Ferraris and Alfas galore, the former including the latest models on promo duty, as well as a 250 Lusso in red - so beautiful. At least 3 Ford GT40s - the list goes on. Standing by the side of a country road for a few hours was never so rewarding!
Ashcombe
Great photo - could so easily be misinterpreted! Lucky you were on the spot to seize the moment. Where exactly was this taken?
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted April 12, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 12, 2011 Great photo - could so easily be misinterpreted! Lucky you were on the spot to seize the moment. Where exactly was this taken? Near Beille, about 10 miles ENE of Le Mans. The cars - over 200 of them - were to visit the circuit at Le Mans to do a lap or laps of the Bugatti Circuit, which does not involve closure of the public roads. The gendarmes seemed entirely unconcerned that some of the entrants were making considerable use of the loud pedal in their powerful cars! Howling Ferrari and Maserati V12s! Oh, and just like the UK, roadworks with a lorry unloading spoil into a ditch etc, were allowed to go on on these narrow lanes. I'm sure the operatives involved had no idea that these monsters would be trying to rush past!
