My bete noir was Bristol Bath Road.

We thought we'd done well NOT to get sworn at, often before we even had time to ask......

Never did get round in four visits.

I had problems with Chester. 2 out of 3 times it would be fine with a friendly forman, the third he was an ogre and practically imprissoned me for 45 mins in an office lecturing me on trespass, the BTC etc etc. After about 3 encounters with him I never risked it again!

Problem was Chester had so many DMUs that worked over such a large area that they were pigs to 'clear'...........

Hi John,

How common were class 37's around Nottingham in the early 1970s?  Were there regular workings ie Immingham Tanks or did they just turn up on anything?

Tony

Hi Tony

Class 37's were not common, use to get one occasionally on the Harwich - Manchester Boat Train.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/9246479668/

Also the odd freight once or twice a week

The Immingham oil trains were almost always class 47s although there appeared to be one class 37 working around 1979

Thanks John,

I always forget about the Harwich boat train!  I think in the early 70's it may have been more regularly a EE type 3 turn.

Down at leicester they were very rare, just occasionally turning up on one of the Croft/Nuneaton to the ER ballast trains, presumably when there were no 31's available.

I still remember D6940 and then D6942 working on following trains one weekday lunchtime.......

I think they may have been more common on the Mountsorrel/Barrow on Soar ballast trains but these ran via the Syston triangle north of Leicester.

Later one was at Leicester MPD for crew training for several weeks -never seemed to go anywhere!

On This Day in History – Ratcliffe On Soar – 14th July 1972

A favourite lineside spot when I was a lad was Ratcliffe on Soar which is located just south of Ratcliffe Power Station and the relatively new East Midlands Parkway station. To get there from Clifton entailed a cycle ride along the now notorious A453, something I would not recommend today.

Class 20 (8016/73/83, 8135/93), class 25 (7563), class 45 (25/90, 103/07/23/34)

On this Day in History - Lenton South Junction, Trowell Junction and Toton – 19th July 1969

The school holidays have just started and forty two years ago it was out and about on the push bike.

Lenton South Junction

Class 20 (8037, 8158), class 25 (7523)

Trowell Junction

Class 20 (8007/47, 8137/47/59/73/97), class 31 (5813), class 37 (6811), class 45 (63/93, 118), class 46 (163), class 47 (1806/23/27/77)

Toton

Class 08 (3026/29, 3404), class 20 (8006/61/63/64, 8114/38/41/43/47/48/50/52/62/76/79/88/89), class 25 (5227/32/42/44, 7500/12/16/29/87, 7602/05/18), class 27 (5375), class 31 (5805), class 44 (2/6/10), class 45 (11/17/37/62/68/76/80/91/97, 108/26), class 47 (1519/46, 1694, 1729/41/59, 1824/29)

Of note are 1519, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML, the ill fated 7605 which would be destroyed three years later just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction and class 27 5375 which is a reminder that during the 1960’s half the class 27 fleet were Midland Main Line engines. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8006/07 ex London and 8114 ex Scotland.

On this day in History - North Nottinghamshire – 20th July 1969

The school holidays have just started and forty two years ago on the day that man first set foot on the moon it was out with the push bike for the forty mile plus round trip to Shirebrook calling in on the way at the old steam shed at Kirkby in Ashfield which was still being used as a stabling point.

Kirkby in Ashfield MPD

Class 20 (8010/12/16/39/40/45/47/48/59/62/68/91, 8111/14/37/44/57/62/67/71/72/74/81/85/91/96), class 45 (66), class 47 (1752, 1807/31)

Shirebrook MPD

Class 08 (3325), class 10 (4057/66/69), class 31 (5584, 5684/87, 5806/14/19/23/24/26/30/33/35/44), class 47 (1518/24, 1791, 1801/97/99, 1998), Brush Prototype HS4000.

Of note are 1518, one of the original batch of twenty class 47’s which did not often stray from the ECML passenger duties, what that was doing at Shirebrook, a freight depot I do not know. HS 4000 of course was the Brush Type 5 prototype Kestrel and was at this time on trial with British Rail and a Tinsley engine. It was regularly out-stationed at Shirebrook working coal trains to Whitemoor yard, March. Also at this time Toton was receiving class 20’s transferred from the London area and from Scotland and on this day I saw for the first time 8010/12 ex London and 8111 ex Scotland.

Thanks John

That sighting of D8111 is the earliest I have seen in the Midlands and confirms our time line of 1970 as correct - she is the lead loco in the pair heading south, 8 mins at

Suspect she was a swap for 27s - we still have D5382 and D5410, not sure when D5410 went north of border but D5382 was certainly there by Autumn 68 so c'est la vie.

Many thanks for these informative posts

Shirebrook MPD
Class 08 (3325), class 10 (4057/66/69), class 31 (5584, 5684/87, 5806/14/19/23/24/26/30/33/35/44), class 47 (1518/24, 1791, 1801/97/99, 1998), Brush Prototype HS4000.

How fascinating, Kikby full of class 20s (13 pairs of them) and no Class 31's, yet the new depot at Shirebrook had no 20's at all and 13 Brush type 2 (or 31's).

Before the proper depot was built they stabled in and around the old goods shed. This split between the two sheds emphasises the split between ER and LMR regions despite being only a stones throw apart and their workings (all colliery related) which would have frequently crossed.

The three class 10s at Shirebrook (out of a miserly 4) is also interesting - no shunters at all at Kirkby in Ashfield!

On this day in History - Grantham – 1st August 1973

A mid week summers day (Wednesday) spent sitting on Grantham station watching the traffic.

Class 08 (3074), class 25 (5190), class 31 (5698), class 40 (258), class 46 (170/92), class 47 (1101/03/04/06/08/09, 1510/14/25/32/41/42/45, 1620/91, 1778/79, 1869, 1970/88), class 55 (9001/02/04/05/07/08/10/11/12/13/14/16/17/18/19/20/21).

On this day I saw seventeen out of twenty two Deltics in service, this representing an availability of at least 77%. Of the five not seen this day 9000/03/09 were in Doncaster works undergoing classified repair (Intermediate/Light/Intermediate respectively), 9006 was making its way from Edinburgh to Doncaster works (which it entered the following day) for an unclassified repair (No.1 power unit change) and 9015 was spare or on exam at Finsbury Park.

Also of note is the fact that at this point in time Grantham still had the requirement for a class 08 pilot engine (3074) out-stationed from Lincoln (40A). 3074 still exists as 08060 on the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway.

On this Day in History - Barry – Swansea – 4th August 1971.

The family holiday in 1971 was to Barry Island, South Wales and it was the last year I went on holiday with them. The family holiday was the one time in the year that I would have a day out on the railways with my Dad in tow. He was not the slightest bit interested in railways but always felt that this was the time to take a more direct interest in my hobby and spend a day with his son. I had already dragged him round the graveyard of steam the previous year, so in 1971 we had a day out to Swansea and this is what we saw that day.

Strange, no class 06 shunter for Glasgow Works in 1976. I thought there was at least one based here in this period.
