August 14, 1962 – a return visit to Fort William shed, to try to photograph the few remaining steam engines stored there after the recent dieselisation of the West Highland services. I had seen them there earlier in the month.

 

Two K1s – 62011/2 – were inside the shed, and beyond the abilities of a young and inexperienced photographer and an old Box Brownie camera. However, I did manage to photograph:

Stanier 5 44975 -

4F 44255 -

J36s 65300 and 65313 - and

 

The J36s were already withdrawn, the K1s were transferred to the North Eastern region soon afterwards, the Stanier 5 went to Dalry Road, and the 4F would also be withdrawn from Fort William – but not until December 1962/January 1963.

 

44255 intrigues me. At the time, I wondered why a locomotive, originally of Midland Railway design and with a reputation for heating bearings, would be sent so far into ex-North British territory, on such a twisting line. (I still wonder, by the way – surely there were more suitable engines spare on the Scottish region). It appears it was used as Fort William’s snowplough engine – you can just make out the tender cover in the photo. A couple of years ago, I found these photos of 44255, taken at Fort William in 1963 –

In these, the engine is facing in the opposite direction from what it was in 1962, and the smokebox has been painted. Why would you turn and work on an engine that was going to be withdrawn? I wonder if a diesel had to be modified to handle a plough, and 44255 was kept as the snowplough engine until that happened? And perhaps it was used at the end of 1962, in the beginning of the ‘great freeze’ – the last steam engine to be operated in normal service from Fort William?

On this day in History - Stoke/Crewe Works– 17th August 1969

 

On this day forty one years ago I paid a visit to Stoke and Crewe. At Stoke locomotives were stabled at Cockshute and on shed were four class 08’s (3291/92, 3798, 3801), eleven class 24’s (5011/20/23/27/33/44/49/63/76/86/92) and one class 25 (5237). Later a tour around Crewe Works produced three class 08’s (3068/95, 3217), one class 11 (12062), four class 20’s (8061/67, 8188, 8303), three class 25’s (7555/61, 7627), thirteen class 40’s (218/39/42/45/73/75/77/81/88, 345/52/64/94), thirty four class 47’s (1501/02/05/06/08/09/10/14/17/28/29/48, 1617/48/77/84/87, 1701/02/12/32/39/44/50/60, 1811/12/58/63/86, 1919/37/60/83), one class 50 (400), three class 73’s (E6012/13/25), one class 74 (E6109), five class 76’s (E26006/16/23/28/48), one class 82 (E3050), one class 84 (E3045), one class 85 (E3077) and four class 86’s (E3111/13/52/93).

 

Of note is the variety of classes under repair at Crewe works including Southern Region electro-diesels and the Manchester – Sheffield dc electrics which were repaired at Crewe following the closure of Gorton works in the mid 1960’s. Also of note is the large number of the first batch of class 47’s (nine out of twenty). After six years in traffic were they due there first general repair? Finally 12062 would be withdrawn eight months later in April 1970 and was broken up at Derby works in December 1971.

I haven't been following this topic, but looked for the 11th August 1968 and was surprised to find no mention of the famous "15 Guinea Special". I was at Carlisle to see this. Black 5's 44871 and 44781 and 70013 Oliver Cromwell doing the honours. I cried.
