On this Day in History – Derby Works – 8th April 1973.

 

Thirty seven eight years ago I had a tour round the now closed and demolished Derby Locomotive Works which produced the following:

class 03 (2381/87), class 08 (3009/34/92/94/98, 3100/07, 3587, 3695, 3765/79, 3856, 3909/12/36/88, 4000, 4149), class 17 (8598), class 20 (8016/29/40/59, 8123/35/36, 8308), class 24 (5025/49/55/57/85), class 25 (5160, 5201/22/84/89, 7539/42/43/50/70/95, 7625/54), class 27 (5349/91), class 40 (242), class 44 (3), class 45 (19/43/59/67/72/86, 106, 45101/03), class 46 (160/71/83).

Steam: 4472 Flying Scotsman, 45690 Leander, 47357.

 

Locomotives of note were ex Southern Region class 08’s 3092/94/98 and 3100 which were withdrawn and were about to undergo an overhaul having been sold for export to a Liberian company, LAMCo. Class 08, 3034 withdrawn from Tinsley in November 1972 and used for spares for the LAMCo class 08’s, broken up at Derby in November 1973. Class 24, 5049 which had been involved in an accident at Kidsgrove when the No2 end cab was crushed back to the bulkhead with the bulkhead bent backwards into the boiler compartment. The repair resulted in 5049 gaining a new cab with the later style roof mounted headcode box.

 

Also of note is the commencement of the class 45 electric train heating equipment fitment with 45101, 45103, 45104 (59), 45105 (86), 45106 (106) and 45107 (43) all present. Where was 45102?

 

Finally there were three steam locomotives under repair, 4472 Flying Scotsman which had run under its own power from Edge Hill after returning from spending four years in America, Stanier Jubilee 45690 Leander being repaired and repainted prior to moving to the Dinting Railway Centre and Fowler Jinty tank 47357 destined for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley.

Locomotives of note: Class 29 6130 had been withdrawn the previous October and was dumped along with 6100/03/07/13/14/16/32 next to Cowlairs signal box opposite Eastfield MPD awaiting the final tow to Glasgow works for breaking up. Class 06 shunters 2424 and 2438 would both be withdrawn in November 1972. Class 24 5114 would be withdrawn in October 1972.

Also of note is how dependant the Scottish Region were at this time on Sulzer type 2 power (supplemented by English Electric type 4) for its internal passenger workings. And finally a reminder that at this point in time class 50’s were regular visitors as for north as Perth (402/36).

A day trip around London some London sheds and terminals. TOPS numbering is in the ascendancy, the first 50's are appearing on the Western Region and the 35s are clinging to life. 25069 arrived at Acton on empty milk tanks mid-morning, but was on shed at Willesden a couple of hours later. A third of all 86s and 87s were seen in one day.

Of note is that despite seeing forty six locomotives at Toton I failed to get all the way round the shed, which explains the lack of any class 44’s. Also you can see the decline of Burton on Trent as a railway centre, in 1971 the collieries, yards and sidings in the Burton - Coalville area could support at least six Burton allocated class 08 pilots and also eleven pairs of class 20’s plus a class 47 (out-stationed from Toton) for South Leicestershire coalfield colliery trip workings

More of the mundane. My paternal grandparents lived on Epple Bay Road at Birchington, which backed onto the railway line and which made spotting over the fence a fairly leisurely exercise. The above is an indication on how industry and railway operation in the Sheffield/Rotherham area has changed. On this Sunday in 1973 the coal mining, steel making and general industry in the Sheffield/Rotherham area was providing employment for at least one hundred freight locomotives and forty three shunting engines. Today on a Sunday you would do well to find any of either except for those at the heritage centre at Barrow Hill.

 

 

 

The presence of class 03, 2045 at Barrow Hill is a reminder that the “local†Railway Company had been providing the motive power for the then considerable Staveley Iron Works complex for over a hundred years. On the demise of steam around 1966 class 03’s took over these duties until the extensive internal rail system was abandoned in the mid 1970’s. There use to be a small sub shed of Barrow Hill within the Iron Works complex. On a previous visit two years earlier on the 1st May 1971 this sub shed held 2129 and 2189.

 

 

 

Locomotives of note are class 08, 3037 which had been withdrawn six months previously and would soon become a snowplough ADB966510 and 45101 recently released from Derby works, carrying a new TOPS number and the first of fifty Peaks to be fitted with electric train heating equipment. Also of note is the partial renumbering with new TOPS numbers of the class 76 fleet.
