Coal over the Halton Curve

Recommended Posts

Engineering works was planned for the Warrington area on Saturday 28 May 2011, the coal from Ellesmere Port Manisty Wharf to Fiddlers Ferry was affected by the works and diverted around the Halton chord, this sees very little traffic, the odd Network Rail train and a summer Saturday only Chester - Liverpool South Parkway (previously Runcorn) "parly", as it turned out the works were cancelled but the diversionary route was still used.

A view of Frodsham Junction, the bracket signal behind the 175 controls access to the chord, this swings off to the right (as I am looking) to join the Weaver Junction - Runcorn section of the WCML, it is now a single track and is uni-directional

The chord - looking a bit sorry for itself, rails quite rusty (the last train was a few weeks ago when a pair of 31s and a measurement coach visited and a similar diversion also took place)

Looking up (literally!) to Halton Junction, notice the old 2-aspect colour light on the right, out of use since the line was singled and made towards Liverpool only. Halton Junction signal box is visible at the top of the bank.

With a bit of squealing and grinding, 70004 appears on 6F02, 10:37, Ellesmere Port Manisty Wharf - Fiddlers Ferry loaded coal (retimed for the diversion only, normally 12:07), running about 20 early.

Halton's home is just visible showing green through the exhaust haze, this cleared before the train appeared, confirming it was on its way, I was slightly worried it might have taken it's normal route, but the green was a pleasant sight.

Bob,

If you search "Clifton Road, Runcorn" in Google Earth, the junction in Dave's first photo in directly south of Google's marker. You can follow the line as it curves round to head northwest over the M56 then alongside the Expressway before joining the LNW line about half a mile before Runcorn Station.

Why the singling and the uni-directionality? Seems a bit odd?

Thanks Phil, the tunnel in the background is under the Expressway

It's on a busway so the google car couldn't get to it, the police checked what I was up to but went away happy after sharing a laugh, I was on the right, about 50 yards up.

Hi Dave,

Nice shots of the 70. Just for your info, after the Helsby - Ellesmere Port service has finished every Saturday the unit runs to

Chester were a swap takes place. (As long as its not a 142 there banned over this line) . The ECS then runs to LIverpool via this route , just

to keep traincrew 'Right the road'.

Cheers

Andy

A 142 has been over the route over 5 years ago and was only spotted when it got back into Liverpool Lime Street. Northern have also tried it within the last 2 years.

This is how the location looked back in 1990 http://mark5812.smug...99_bqGQ5DB-A-LB

It was one of BR's "inspired" money saving moves. The remaining line is worked (I think) by Absolute Block; to make it a proper bi-directional single line would have involved spending MONEY (perish the thought!).
