masons 2010 challenge layout

well here goes, i thought id have a go in this challenge as iv watched and admired many entries in the past and layouts such as pugsleys chittle that have inspired me.

ok my entry

the main scenic board is 4ft x 1ft chipboard on 2" x 2" braces, the fiddle yard ( yet to be built ) will be 2ft x 1ft

the main scenic board can be viewed from either side although the fiddle yard can be reversed depending on the side thats being viewed ( makes sense in my head?  :D)?

the layout is to be fully working on dc although im thinking that by a years time it could be dcc sound. the layout will depict a small spur off the main line that leaves the country hills and embankments into a industrial area with a small stabling point and fueling and also wagon storage sidings.

most of the buildings im going to attempt to scratch build in either card or plastics, as you will see from my pics iv already made a start on the first building which is the service shed, im not really happy with it and may redo it in plastics and balsa, also the embankments have been started using celotex foam insulation cut and shaped and painted brown and awaiting some basket liner and foliage. i think this will be finished well before a years time as i usually dont hang around when i get going?  :D :D? but i think that money will hold me up slightly but as always my aim is to do this as cheap as possible, im also going to attempt to put alot of finer details in like point rodding.

well i cant think of anything else to say about this so hopefully there will be some comments and im very sorry about the pics but for now it gets the thread off the ground

thanks and regards

thanks chaps, :) :) i used the same trick on my pilot road box file layout in the factory interior and it really works well, i have to thank jon ( sandhills ) for the original pic which i basically scanned and resized, i think it gives an effect of more depth, i liked marc smiths idea on hendre lane of using mirrors, but i wanted to show something other than whats in front of ther mirror, really happy its worked and thanks for the nice comments

regards :)

ok a little more of an update on the work thats gone on as i tend not hang around on the planning side of building a layout and get stuck in.

firstly iv wired the power feeds up and all works pretty sweetand after a little play i decided on the scenics and buildings.

the first scenics to go on all be it loosely was the hanging basket liner for the embankments which i wasnt sure about with it being pretty long i wasnt sure how it would look but i think it looks very good and with a little more foliage added and some colour .

next is the first major building to be built. basically iv taken a image from the web, and messed around with it in paint to create 4 sides and a roof, the prints where then printed and using a spare box file i made the walls and roof panels, i used a box file as the card is very rigid but pretty easy to cut, and if you know my previous work im pretty partial to a box file?  :D, the overall finish is very good and i think looks the part, just a bit of greenery to add and some weathering also

the next building i started was a scalescenes freebie which i originally used on pilot road box file, but i decided to change it about a little and added a interior shutter door and a different interior, i love the effect a photo inside a building gives and im really surprised iv not seen alot more of it in model railway buildings, unless im not looking close enough?  :D, i also made a gate and pillers to tie the 2 buildings together and give another angle for photos( when i get a better camera).

Try using a bit of grammar in your wording. It will look as good as your modelling.wink.gif

Kind regards

I had a day off from working for a change and decided that some of the buildings i had already done were not that great, so out came the card and paper and came up with a depot low relief and added my little touchs to the fantastic scalescenes low relief warehouse

comments welcome

well today i had a go at making trees using old wire, twisting it around itself to create a trunk and fanning the ends out to create branches, next i pianted the whole wire brown with some plasti cote paint and dipped in some dark green light flock

when it was dry i applied some pva all over the branches and applied some rubberised horse hair and torn up basket liner and then prayed it lightly with 50/50 pva and water and dipped it in some dark flock again and leave to dry and then coated it in hairspray.

im not totally convinced with them maybe they will grow on me? ? ? :D? ? :D
