RMweb Gold NeilHB Posted November 23, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 23, 2009 Hi all, Thought I would ask the collective power of RMWeb for a wee bit of help. One of the ladies on my uni course is undertaking a study of the Great Northern Railway station in Derby, in particular the Friar Gate bridge and the station, for one of her assignments, however she has not been able to find much out about the station in terms of history and photographs, and I was hoping someone on here might be able to help me point her in the right direction for obtaining information about the site? Alternatively any photographs that any members have and are willing to share and allow inclusion into her university project would be wonderful. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance all.
Peter Kazmierczak
Neil, Best book by far is "The Friargate Line - Derby & the Great Northern Railway" by Mark Higginson (1989) ISBN 095138340X Try a Google search for "Derby Friargate" and there are links to other images. Also try the "Geograph" website and there are some current images of the station site on that.
RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted November 23, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 23, 2009 I have found this site with lots of detailed photos of the bridge - but not much about the station http://www.derbyphotos.co.uk/features/friargatebridge/index.htm This web site also mentions another book Memories of Friargate Station by Susan Bourne. 100 Pages Published in 1998 by Breedon Books. ISBN 1-85983-116-8 I don't want to give out too much information on a public forum but if you search for the author of 'The Friargate Line' you will soon find out where he works and his email address Hope that helps Mike

These two are long out of print, but your local library should be able to get them via an Inter Library Loan.
RMweb Premium pete_mcfarlane Posted November 23, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 23, 2009 There is a 4 book series by the RCTS called "The Great Northern Railway in the East Midlands" which covers all of the lines west of Grantham. I think one of these books covers Friargate.
