narrowman
On Wednesday 22nd June, I'm off on another coach trip, this time to Leek and Ashbourne. I've looked on the internet, but I can't find any reference to a model/model railway shop in either location. Does anyone know of one? I know it's unlikely, but you never know! Andy Y
Not that I know of Tony but there's a decent cheese shop in Ashbourne.
'CHARD
And a disused tunnel portal about as close to the centre of town as it's possible to get. http://www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/tunnels/gallery/ashbourne.html Now lit within and part of a trail. Lovely.
RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted June 20, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 20, 2011 I can't recall ever going to Leek - but there's nothing in Ashbourne However you will be in the right place if you have an interest in narrow gauge because of the Leek and Manifold Railway http://www.kachuzyn.fsnet.co.uk/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leek_and_Manifold_Valley_Light_Railway If you look very carefully in Ashbourne you might find some evidence of the remains of the Henmore Dale Light Railway that was built following the line of the River Henmore to the stone quarries in the Hopton area - much of this line is now under Carsington reservoir Further details of this line are here http://www.ngtrains.com/Pages/TVG/henmore.htm and http://www.ngtrains.com/Pages/TVG/wigan.htm The layout will be at the Mickleover (Derby) show in October and Derby (Moorways) in May next year. Poor Old Bruce
What they are trying to say is that, about midway between Leek and Ashbourne is the village of Waterhouses where the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway started. The trackbed is now a tarmaced path and there are two cycle hire places if you are the energetic type. There is a toy shop in Ashbourne, near the Market Place, but it looks more like cuddly toys and plastic balls from the outside.
narrowman
I've been told there's a diecast/collectors shop in Leek, along with Brindley's Mill and museum, both sounding like worth visiting. I'm currently looking for reference for a mill for my 7mm Narrow gauge layout, "The Wetlands Railway". The cheese shop in Ashbourne will also get a visit (Thanks, Andy!). I love cheese, Gromit. RMweb Premium Mike Bellamy Posted June 21, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 21, 2011 I'm currently looking for reference for a mill for my 7mm Narrow gauge layout, "The Wetlands Railway". The unusual mill at Osmaston is very close to Ashbourne - http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=22494955 Another close by is Atlow Mill - now an Educational Training Centre http://www.atlowmill.org/ You may also get some inspiration from this page from Derbyshire Heritage http://www.derbyshireheritage.co.uk/Menu/Archaeology/Mills.php Mike
narrowman
Thanks for all your replies! Unfortunately the mill in Leek was shut until 2pm and the coach left at 1.30pm! The collectors' shop was interesting, but didn't have anything I really needed. Thanks to Andy for telling me about the cheese shop in Ashbourne (Chedar Gorge, if I remember correctly, which had a superb selection of cheeses and pies.. mmmm pies... The railway bridge/tunnel was very interesting and could be a future project... - but next to it was a 'big toys' shop which a a selection of classic motor bikes (full size!). There was also St John Street Gallery & Cafe, which had a selection of good modern art and great coffee (and cakes!) Cheers, Tony
