RMweb Gold john new Posted July 7, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2011 Doesn't seem to have been posted by anyone else. If you have tried to use youtube today you may be headscratching cos' it appears to have broken! Answer is it isn't broken just updated, and very annoyingly without a big notice telling you why the change stops it working. Thanks to Google help forum here is the answer so I have passed it on:- People in the Google Help Forum are complaining that they’ve lost their player controls at YouTube and the only way to get them back is to insert an S after http in the address bar. So if I right click on a Favorite video to open it in a new tab, I have no player controls when the box comes up, so I have to go to the URL and add S to the end of http & hit Enter then the page refreshes with the video & its normal player controls. This will be tedious for all. Some just go to the homepage https://www.youtube.com and that puts them behind the wall so not every video has to be address-changed manually, but this is gonna be tedious and upsetting to millions of normal YouTubers tomorrow. In case the mods think the quote is a copyright breach it came from here - http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=7e59c92880940772&hl=en
Andy Y
That's going to upset an awful lot of site owners and advertisers - how utterly foolish.
S.A.C Martin
I can't replicate this at all with my Youtube controls - can you describe exactly when you first found this? You may find that they've done this to prevent the huge amount of illegally embedded Youtube videos on the net. Youtube's a big business now, with a ridiculous amount of money going around in advertising. Consequently, some people try to get around the system and score big by mass embedding of videos external to Youtube in order to bump numbers on their sites up. It may also be linked to their trialling the HTML5 Video Player in certain regions and with certain selected users. YouTube HTML5 Video Player This is an opt-in trial of HTML5 video on YouTube. If you are using a supported browser, you can choose to use the HTML5 player instead of the Flash player for most videos. Your comments will help us improve and perfect the mixtures we're working on. So jump in, play around, and send your feedback directly to the brains behind the scenes. Supported Browsers We support browsers that support both the video tag in HTML5 and either the h.264 video codec or the WebM format (with VP8 codec). These include: Firefox 4 (WebM, Available here) Google Chrome (WebM) Opera 10.6+ (WebM, Available here) Apple Safari (h.264, version 4+) Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (h.264,Available here, WebM support avaliable here) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8 with Google Chrome Frame installed (Get Google Chrome Frame) Notes Fullscreen support is partially implemented. Pressing the fullscreen button will expand the player to fill your browser. If your browser supports a fullscreen option, you can then use that to truly fill the screen If you want to find videos with WebM formats available, you can use the Advanced Search options to look for them (or just add &webm=1 to any search URL) Video annotations are not supported in the HTML5 video player Additional Restrictions (we are working on these!) Videos with ads are not supported (they will play in the Flash player) On Firefox and Opera, only videos with WebM transcodes will play in HTML5 If you've opted in to other testtube experiments, you may not get the HTML5 player (Feather is supported, though) Youtube HTML5
RMweb Gold john new Posted July 7, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2011 I agree too Andy but think the reason is to aid privacy and to stop eavesdropping on our Youtube use. Given the fuss over privacy and Google recently I guess they had to do it. The real stupidity is no big banner put onto the header to every page on the site saying to play change the url to..... Big company arrogance that cost me modelling time today because before I found the answer to the problem I posted above I found a suggestion I had to delete/reinstall the Flash player and wasted time doing that first. RMweb Gold john new Posted July 7, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 7, 2011 I can't replicate this at all with my Youtube controls - can you describe exactly when you first found this? About 10am this morning I followed a link from a Gnatterbox post into Youtube and at first glance all looked OK but when I tried to play the video the box showed just a black rectangle not the first frame of the video and there was no play arrow. ............. because before I found the answer to the problem I posted above I found a suggestion I had to delete/reinstall the Flash player and wasted time doing that first. The suggestion that replacing Flash Player fixes the problem is on Google support here - http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=56115 but I don't think that is what fixed it for me, as if it had I wouldn't have searched/found/suggested the https:// fix suggestion posted above. Changing url to https and refreshing did cure it. That situation was replicated on both my PCs this morning, one running XP the other Win7 64 bit. However it could be that they may have been forced to revert back. I was about to update our SLS page with the Orion video link on it. The original embedded http:// link on our site is working and from Youtube both an http:// and an https:// URL are currently working. For ref the links to our videos if you want to test with them are at:- Embedded in our SLS Orion page - http://www.stephensonloco.org.uk/sls_orion.htm On Youtube the Stephensonloco page is here http://www.youtube.com/user/stephensonloco and https://www.youtube.com/user/stephensonloco
bertiedog
Net is reporting complete failure to play content on most browsers this morning, Chrome runs the video's though at the moment, but not in Firefox or IE They tried an update that is not compatible with most browsers is the current explanation, without any explanation of what they have done. coachmann
Just clicked on a random few 'favourites' (songs) and they all play like before, thank goodness.
bertiedog
There are reports it is the Adobe flash video that is behind the issues, and it is the latest that is causing it, but this does not explain why Chrome functions OK Stephen.
bertiedog
The embedded videos work in Google Chrome, but fail in Firefox, (latest and up dated), what are youtube up to, have they tried to ditch Flash and use HTML 5 instead? The graphic page layout has changed today as well, with grey and black surrounds, and relocated controls. Stephen

bertiedog
If you read my above post, you may find out But they do not say if the change has been made globally, it is optional according to the site, but it seems the option is not implemented on Firefox in the latest form., despite trying the links etc.,
Leicester Thumper
tried youtube logged in and out, all is fine and using firefox 5 all videos play as usual in the same way.
bertiedog
My Firefox has returned to normal , with up dated graphics and using Html5 and flash, so I suspect US time is being used for up dates ahead of US usage today. Might have helped though if they had mentioned changes on the main page! Stephen.
