ERNIE's Scottish Railway Archive

Recommended Posts

I have just about finished the transfer of the former fotopic collections to Flickr

http://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/

Today the Annan and Dumfries collections have been added. There are also a fair number of 'new to the Net' images.

One or two collections still to add including Galloway,Nithsdale and Waverley. Hopefully a sample is added below

Every now and again the internet turns up with something so useful you wonder how you managed without it, this collection of photo's (for me anyway) is one of those things.

Thank you Ernie, for allowing us access to such a wonderful collection of period photographs.

Ever thought of publishing them?

regards

Stewart

Hi Stewart,

I have thought, and also been approached about publishing them but after reflection I decided against it for a number of reasons.

1.) Now that I have retired I don't have the time!; 2.) When you get down to actually sorting out a theme etc there are either large gaps in the coverage or there isn't really enough quality material. 3.) Its not cost effective.

A fair number of the images have been published and I am quite happy to provide scans on CD at a reasonable charge for anyone who would like a permanent record for their own use.

I have recently acquired several thousand 'rejects' from a well known Transport Archive and am busy scanning them. Some of the negatives date back to the 1930's and I shall be uploading them in due course. There are quite a few from the Dundee area; the locomotives may be a little blurred but the infrastructure is all there!

Ideal for modellers!

regards ERnie

Another wee collection of Scottish stuff added to Ernie's photostream I see, starting about here: http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream

couple of highlights (IMO)

- Dunragit looking well, undated, but BR-period signage: http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream

- Barrhill looking truly hideous in mint green with yellow window frames. Even that ghastly ScR/Caley blue looks better than this: http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/

Just having a further look at the Western unidentified and I am fairly sure that b259 (loco 7829 with a Hymek in the background) is Carmarthen - the topography looks right on Google maps as well).

I wonder if b078 is Hemerdon - not at all sure on that tho'

I suspect b085 is somewhere between Gloucester and Standish Jcn.

I.m fairly sure that b465 - b468 is the same place but looking north and I think the bridge is the one carrying the B4072.

Ernie has just added about ten pages- on the intro to his Flickr site- of West Highland pictures from 1985- there are some lovely images there, and well worth a look.

The West Highland collection just added takes the form of a trip up the line on the 23-25 September 1985; a fair number were already on Flickr as part of a 'Locations' set up.

The latest upload features 50 new views of Prestonpans in the 1980's.

Ernie
