Saxmundham and the RETB test engine

66736 has recently been fitted with RETB prior to a spell in Scotland, GBRF took the opportunity to test it on the East Suffolk line, prior to it heading up North later this week. It was booked to run to Lowestoft, back to Saxmundham and then to Lowestoft before returning to Harwich, lucky for me, it's reversal at Saxmundham was during lunch so, armed with my camera, off I went .. (in the heavy rain)

It's many years since I was in that part of the world; we used to catch the train home there after holidays on the coast. The branch was stilI open then. I was convinced it had staggered platforms, which a google search has confimed. Any idea when the new platform was built?

Pete,

the replacement platform was built in the summer of 1980 & opened at the end of March 1981

Nigel

Cheers,

It was built over the site of the goods yard (I've bought the Middleton Press books for the area !)

see if you can get yourself a copy of An illustrated history of the East Suffolk, John Brodribb, OPC 2003, absolutely superb!! with alot of personal input from Peter Punchard the ex-Halesworth Signalman

I'm at the former final destination of the line at Gt. Yarmouth, & sadly drive down the former site of Southtown on a daily basis

Regards Nigel
