RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted November 28, 2009 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 28, 2009 Hi, whilst experimenting with different speaker positions in my Hymek (4mm Heljan with a Howes supplied ESU) I've managed to drop the speaker on the live rails. The motor and light functions still work but the only sound it will make is a high pitched screech. I'm prepared for the worst and have the credit card at the ready to order a replacement; but before I do is it worth trying to reset something or attempting to get the chip re-blown or (as I suspect) am I likely to have done permanent damage to the chip? Tried a different speaker in the hope it was just that which was the problem but unfortunately it definitely looks (or should I say sounds) as though it's the chip. RMweb Gold big jim Posted November 28, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2009 i did something similar once with a 153 chip, it resulted in everything bar the sounds working as the short blew the amp, look at the chip and see if a boxy looking componant towards the non wires end of the chip has burned the outer heatshrink or even smells burned, if so i'd say its the amp thats blown

RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted November 28, 2009 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 28, 2009 Thanks guys, it does make me feel slightly better that I'm not the only one to have done this! Can't see or smell any burning through the heat shrink, but the chip did get pretty hot. Oh well, looks like I'll be ordering a new one. LNERandBR
Try getting in touch with Howes before ordering a replacement. Explain what happened and see if they'd replace it for you.
RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted November 29, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 29, 2009 Did something very similar with my SWD Loksound in the class 3 tank, shorted a speaker terminal to the metal body. SWD replaced the chip under warranty no problems
