St Treath Road

Hi

Well its been a long time trying to decide what I could model, Somerset and Dorset is what id like to have modelled but I want to better my skills before starting a layout of the Somerset and Dorset. So my other favourite area which I would like to have a model of is a Cornish themed layout so here began a long journey of trying to find a track layout I like which I could have a go at most skills to achieve a good finished result. After looking through this forum at the fantastic layouts that have been modelled on here 1 in particular stood out and made me dig out my past copies of model rail that layout being Carrick Road. After looking through the Carrick Road thread and reading model rail i knew this is something I want to achieve with my layout. So after speaking to Neil asking could I use ideas off his layout being as the track plan is something I was looking for. So with the go ahead from Neil a trip was made to B and Q and bought enough wood for the base boards which I had drawn up. So it was full steam ahead making the boards to go in my shed.

So back to the layout it is completely fictional. It is a branch line off the Cornish mainline leading to the seaside terminus of St Treath Road the layout is set in the 1950/1960 on a summer Saturday with seaside specials coming and going all day long brining holiday makers to the seaside resort of St Treath. The line has to come over the River Towen and into the station. It is a small terminus so requires alot of movement to release engines or engines backing on to their train and also there is the goods traffic to the station.

I'm hoping my layout looks as good as other layouts on this forum. So here it goes i have put a few pictures up of what i have done so far :)

Picture 1 and 2 are of the main base board as they look at present.

Picture 3 is where the bridge will be going eventually over the River Towen

It has been awhile since I posted on this topic. I have done a few bits to the layout since I last posted pictures on here. I have now wired the whole station area and at the moment is working well. This week I have been working on the platforms and station forecourt and street area. And I have also been working on the station building ready to put on the layout. (Although I am not to keen on the station building at the moment I don't think it looks right and not to sure how I can improve what I have done so far. Any help would be great on this? )

Well I have completed my first scratch built building and am really pleased with how it looks and I am shocked how well it turned out for my first attempt. Its the dries for china clay and when will go on the layout when i decide where it will go.

As I said I am pleased with how it turned out, not as good as other peoples work on here. I have primed the plastic and next is to paint it but that's for another night.

Happy Modelling

Hi

Well after another good Warley show last week end and a few new ideas and lots of inspiration. After seeing Denyse Insley making trees in Warley i thought id like to try so have half done the job and have got photo (Not as good as Denyses) but im pretty pleased with what i have done. I have also done alot of the track work on the curved section leading out of the station. In the process of ballasting the station although i am not very pleased with how it looks. I have also started wiring the Cobalt point motors with ESU decoders what a nightmare they have been but are now working hurray. If anyone has got any ideas how i could tidy up the ballast in station that would be great.

Just a small update due to it being so cold in my shed, I have done a few bits but not as much i would have liked. I have wired up another 4 points leaving 4 left to wire now. All the station area is ballasted but having few problems with chunks of ballast coming loose so have had to add more ballast and glue it back down but hoping when i weather the track it will stay down. (will upload pictures soon)

Here is an update of the layout. I have relayed the ballast in the station area but not sure if it makes a difference? Also I have started on the shed area but looking for pictures of small loco shed to see they would have looked like, if any one has got a few pictures they would be kind enough to share that would be great.

Hi! Please retain your enthusiasm as you are doing a good job. It's nice to see the detailed, ongoing photos which show the progress you are making.

I would get the rear area of your layout sorted - the backscene and any trees, hedging etc, before you put structures into the foreground - as leaning over stuff can do damage. It would also start to set your trackwork into "context" and look good!

Agree with Great Bear, too. Paint your rails/weather them...great fun.

Keep us posted.

Jeff.

Thanks for the kind comments the problem i find is i can point out all the bad things and never see the good. Any bad points people think i could change please advise. Andrew for the dries i have a set of drawings which i used a vernia to scribe the plasticard with the sizes and then cut all the bits i needed and then laminated the white plasticard with stone effect plastic. I can try and dig the plans out and send you a copy?

Its been awhile since i have worked on the layout being that its in my shed and the temperatures outside aint been to warm so the shed has been to cold to work in. Finishing work early today and temperatures being mild did some work on the layout.

I have finished all the wiring for the points and the decoders for the points are now all completly wired and have finished the trackwork to the china clay dries. And have also stated work on the back scene which makes a huge difference to the layout all ready.

Here are a few pictures of the layout as it is now.

I would put the water columns/cranes at the "departure end" end of the platforms, either just before the platform ramp if platform mounted, or just beyond the ramp if ground mounted.

The signal box is perhaps best placed by assessing which location gives the signalman the overall best view of (signalling) operations. I might be tempted to put it to the side of where your autocoach is parked in one of your photos, as it should give a good view of both the platforms and the station throat.

Thanks for the advice. With the Hornby water columns you get 2. The 1 which you can see on the platform and a bigger free standing tower. but not sure which is the best place to put the 2 . I have got the free standing at the end of the main platform ramp and still got another platform mounted water column to put on 1 of the platforms. Ill take a picture when im up the shed next to where i thought it might go or if im wrong?

Hi Andy

Thank you. My next purchase is going to be a Dapol class 22 How do you find it runs? I will keep the pictures coming Just hope it looks good.

Scott

Hi Scott, my Dapol 22 is fine and seems to run better with DCC, still not as good as Heljan so I will need a Hymek soon. All the best Andy.
