Tel2010
Hello all I've been wanting to have a continuous run for quite a while but space or rather lack of as curtailed plans till now. what i have ended up with is a baseboard with a total length of thirteen and a half feet by four, would have loved it to be a bit wider but width limited by where it has to be stored. Only the front two and half boards will be scenic, the rest hidden with a fiddle yard and return loop. Not much got done over the summer with other things getting in way,but finaly got a train running, and even though a good few joints across boards theirs not been any problems yet with the electrics although they not yet complete. Anyway a picture can paint a thousand words so to speak so here are a few to explain how its assembled, Tel Edit,21/11/2011. imaged added now ive completed the doors. The doors have shelfs built onto the fronts,so as to not waste space. View of layout in stored position, boards have bolts to retain them,so can be lowered one at a time without other been pulled down by accident. The board on the left,is the third ,free standing board which lifts out and just perches on the end frame,Its the first board to be lifted out.The safety chain has now been removed as doors bolt shut ,so little chance of anything falling when in stored position. Folded trestle Main support beams all held in place with four back flap hindges with removable pins Having pulled retaining bolt out first board starts to be lowered Small rollers aid it to be slid along support beams, also small wood blocks guide it. Nearly down the piece of wood rests it a moment while i pull wireing clear .The handle on top of board is only temporary. Touch down, The handle and track protection can now be removed. The handle now removed and retaining bolts are now pushed back, the shelf brackets aid in supporting end board while pins put in. End board, first step undo velco and drop hindged leg to floor. Board lifted up, location dowels match up and pin put in. Two catches hold end boards together, after release ,top board swung open a second hindged leg dropped down and a cross brace connected across.Other pin put in to secure to main board. The other board is dropped down and secured with a pin also,it also has a hindged leg for support. Lastly the fiddle yard is dropped into place completing the circuit. Its a through fiddle yard moving on drawer runners, the electrical connection is by small ball catches, with one end supplying the llive feed and other the return. Iv'e yet to add the extra tracks which will give four lines, although one has to be clear to enable a run through. Iv 'e still got to put back scene board onto end turntable board.Height has been limited to ten inches high to be able to fold in the space thats available. The platform needs more bracing and track slightly tweeking for goods shed and coal drop. There will be a second platform on otherside of tracks but as they say thats another story, for another time. Well hope this idea is of use to others, who are limited by space for a continuous run. Any comments most welcome. Tel
RMweb Premium Kris Posted September 16, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 16, 2011 Looks like a very clever solution to your storage issues Tel.
backofanenvelope
Wow, that's a pretty impressive bit of engineering.. look forward to seeing more Tel. Tom
Tel2010
Thanks Kris and Tom for your comments. I forgot to add baseboards made out of 6mm ply with a two by one softwood frame. It only takes me on my own around ten minutes to put it up and take down. The fiddle yard will have a slide in top and ends enabling me to hopefully leave some stock on it,and be stored under bed when not in use. Probably have to put something like foam core or foam deviders in.just in case stock tips when moving board. I may keep posting future developments of layout itself in the blog section. It will have a LNER flavour to it,the station buildng very near completion. Its a much bashed scalescene medium station kit, early pictures of it are in card modeling structure forum.Must get some more updated photos uploaded. Sorry some of photos aint too brillient but only got a small compact camera at present and at times a funny light in that room. Tel
jpnewbold
I really like the engineering solutions to the space problems you have, and the little details that show lots of thought went in to the design - like the safety chain. And I think the time it takes you to set up is remarkable, takes me longer to get out of bed
