Commer/Karrier Fire Engines

Does anyone know if anyone makes a commer or Karrier Fire Engines for 00gauge?

I already have a Green Godess for Ramsbottom in 1950/60 but would really like one of the above due to the fact that the local station did have a Karrier "21 CTB" but is also a two pump station. (My stepdad is a fireman here)

Also anyone know how i would wire up a blue flashing light to a green godess ;)

Cheers

Hi Dan

Dont think so (although I stand to be corrected if someone knows better) but I fancy one as well, so might have a go at making the body etc out of plasticard (it doesnt look too difficult although it is slightly more than just a box!) and using a grille off a Base Toys Commer!

The best I can suggest, besides scratchbuilding, is to combine two cheapish models; Base Toys do the Commer/Karrier cabs and Oxford Diecast offer various fire engines with Dennis, Bedford, AEC or Leyland cabs (plus some much more modern ones). It would take a fair bit of hacking to achieve, though.

Hi Dan

I’d agree that the best and cheapest way to model one would be to use a Base toys cab/chassis and then scratchbuild the body from plasticard, using the corrugated/ridged sheets for the shutters.

Not sure if you’re aware of the following website which has a lot of current and archive pictures of North-west brigades, including 21 CTB in its second life

http://www.fireflash-delta64.co.uk/ramsbottomarch.html

there’s also a good side on picture on the Morecambe page of a similar vehicle

http://www.fireflash-delta64.co.uk/morecabmearch.html

Nearest kit I know of is the Fire Brigade Models Durham Commer FBM/176/06 but it has a different front grille, opening rather than folding rear cab doors and lockers instead of roller shutters. Kits are unpainted resin bodies with whitemetal parts and around the £50 mark I believe

www.firebrigademodels.net/

A good source of detailing parts is BW Models

http://www.bwmodels....p?pageid=232727

Re the flashing blue light, I know Express Models do a kit, as do others.

Don’t know if you could do it more cheaply if you got the bits yourself, someone else may be able to help you with that (my electrical knowledge starts and ends at changing a lightbub)

PS No connection with any of the firms above, but I’ve dealt with the latter two and been a satisfied customer

Hi Phil R,

I know of the Fire Flash Website very well, its just a shame the flashing kit seems quite dear for £15!

But does look good.

As for plasticard ive never tried any of this so it would be a challenge maybe a good challenge

Cheers for that

Good luck with building one. Another starting point might be the body from the old Minic Motorways Commer fire engine which was about 1/76 and based on an HCB body I believe (Kent MKL742 and MKL743 as shown on the second link below). These bodies turn up a toyfairs quite frequently.

One of the problems with fire appliances from this era is the sheer variety of bodytypes. A quick look at the Kent fleet of Commers includes about 10 different bodybuilders/styles on the same basic chassis. The link below also includes a Karrier Gamecock with a Carmichael body showing the arrangement of pump and hosereels at the back.

Hi Dan,

A few years further down the line I know but, did you get a result on your Karrier Gamecock enquiry from 2011? I only joined the forum a year or so ago and have only just seen your post. I have two of these models released by Atlas Editions a few years ago now. Certain releases of theirs are very hard to find but crop up now and again. Another one was the Commer 21A which I think they called the Avenger. What location/area are you modelling.

I'm working on Kent around 1959/60. Both Commer engines at my local station proved impossible to find so scratchbuilds were the only answer, the first one is done and the second is underway. With the first one finished I then found the Atlas Avenger which is very similar (typical). The Commer water tender ladder will hopefully be done in a few months.

Kind Regards,

Paul.
