Class 33 livery

Hi all

I'm always on the lookout for unusual liveries for my 0 gauge diesels. I'm considering buying a second Class 33 and I found this livery: http://www.railwayherald.co.uk/imaging.centre/showimage.php?image=211854&type=25&gallery=X8&cbcsection=diesel|@type=25.

Does anyone know how this came about and how long it lasted? I can't (so far) find another picture, but I have found some that seem to show the white window frames repainted yellw, but the broad orange stripe round the cantrail is still there. Was this an unofficial livery?

There were several versions of painted window surrounds. Apart from 33012 with it's black mask there was at least on 33/1 with the same white window surrounds, and I believe Heljan produced it. Couldn't tell you the dates though. Sorry

I've a quick google image search for 83301, and found an interesting site-

http://crompton.zxq.net/CromptonLivery.htm

Then there's a couple on Departmentals & Internal Users, and it gives some details.

http://www.departmentals.com/photo/83301 and http://www.departmentals.com/photo/83301-1

And then there's this shot of the entire test consist.

Good Luck

Phil and Catkins, thanks for your replies. They are very useful.

Now I have to find out if any of those with the white or black window surrounds ever ventured up to the North West where my layout is based. I know about the 33s allocated to Crewe and working to Holyhead and Manchester - so just need a picture or reference to justify one on the layout.

IIRC correctly the white window surrounds on a number of the 33/1's were authorised by Allan Baker who was in charge of Eastleigh MPD at the time, at least 33101, 103, 107 & 119 being so treated.

Some may remember him better as the last depot manager of Finsbury Park, famous of course for white window surrounds on a certain other class...

12 was the only one with black despite Lima's 25 ! Whatever was on Cardiff from the Portsmouths would have appeared on the Crewe workings so yes it most likely did turn up along with the white examples. Despit being brought with 33s and mk1s, I have never seen a FULL list of locos that carried white. Anybody have one.......????

Eastwestdivide - that's an interesting shot of the 33 at Clapham. Looks like the combined working of 33+TC and VEP. The second (and maybe third) unit looks like it has the smaller VEP windows.

Yes, well spotted. 33/1+4TC towards Salisbury (Yeovil?), splitting from 4VEP+4VEP at Basingstoke. Rush hour only.

Must see if I can bring up the shadows a bit on that photo some time.

Elsewhere, the silver roof/red buffer beam versions mentioned in post 9 by Cornish Triang Paul - weren't they the early named ones, Burma Star etc?

To dig this thread up from the past.. I've spent a few minutes browsing flikr to see if I can put a time window on white windows - rather shorter than expected is my preliminary assessment!

I admit responsibility for 33023's livery.

In 1988, I was on my Graduate Engineer placement at Selhurst, and 023 came to the Repair Shop following fire damage on the underframe that also scorched the bodysides. Battery fault from memory. As the loco needed a repaint, I asked the Depot Manager if we could have a go at a special livery. The image shows the result. The painting was undertaken by the Repair Shop painters, as distinct from Selhurst Paint Shop's painters. The latter had at least one special loco livery to their name, 73005.

Splendid job! I became aware of this variation when a photo appeared in Traction magazine years ago - I'm sure that was dated 1988 too. I've occasionally looked for other pics but without much luck - sorry Eddie but I don't think the Repair Shop's handiwork lasted very long, just like 33012's unique paint job which I believe only existed for around 9 months.

The only 33 I ever saw with white window surrounds was 33105 at Bristol TM on 15th October 1984, by which time the white paint was looking very tired.
