Nice friendly show that is worth a visit and the home made cake made it even more worthwhile.

Met up with Tim C & Mrs Tim C on Thames Wharf Yard and chatting away we got on to the O size layout versus the OO size layout and how less is more.

Looking at Thames Wharf Yard makes you realise that in a small space you can build layout in O that offers as much operational interest as a bigger OO one. And the opportunity to go for the increase in detail makes it even more attractive as well. Nice layout, worth seeing.

Also the layout called The Brewery, very nice. Compact highly detailed layout with plenty going on in a small space. Even this done in O would not challenge available space much. Ian Manderson is a RMweb member but claims not to have posted yet. Come on Ian, get posting and talk about your great layout.

Then there is Wheal Elizabeth. Amazing. It was the brightness of it that caught my eye as I walked into the room and then as I got closer the detail that makes up this very nice Cornish China Clay facility down far west.

Three layouts that are worth seeing along with all the others on show and if you are thinking of something to do tomorrow, go along and you wont be disappointed.

Have to say I was very impressed by this show, my first time going so wasn't sure what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised. the venue (lots of small characterful rooms on 2 floors in 2 buildings) gives it a unique atmosphere, very friendly and relaxed, aided no doubt by the presence of a bar! The quality of the layouts was excellent and would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking of going.

Having been today I am even more looking forward to taking Pallet Lane next year!

Nice little show. Wheal Elizabeth ran like a pig for the first hour and I soon had to take the fiddle yard apart to realign the rails through the baseboard joint. Things did improve this afternoon, but apologies to anyone who witnessed the initial mutterings. Thanks for the kind words and pics above. We'll be in blue diesel & air brake mode first thing tomorrow.

Didn't get as much time looking at the others layouts as I'd have liked so I intend to spend more time doing this tomorrow. Trade isn't bad. Rural Railways always have something to help me part with my cash. Bar is good. A pint of Thatchers over lunch is a most agreeable way to spend an hour.

Have just got back from this show and I must agree with the other comments above, what a cracking show!!!

I went mainly to see Mallingford Central, Wheal Elizabeth and The Brewery, but enjoyed all the other layouts as well.

The most surprising thing was that ,my missus came with me and enjoyed it as well!!!!, shes not really a train person and deosn't get grown men playing with toy trains!!!, but I left her chatting to Paul Davis on Esme River Railroad for 1/2 an hour whilst I chatted to others.

I also bumped into Dave Baverstock with his layout Hope Berringer, which depicts a Preservation Line. It was whilst we were looking at this lyaout, that my wife was overheard saying, "If you build something like that, I'll help with the scenery" Now she can't deny this as one of the BMRG club members overheard her.

But over all a great show, and with the plus side of there being a bar there, I'm sure I can help Rob next year with Pallett Lane ;) ;) ;)

Regards

Neal.

Back home now with Thames Wharf Yard safely back in Paul's garage. As mentioned above a very friendly show - we've been invited back next year with our new O gauge layout - it doesn't have a name yet but it is another engine shed/goods shunting puzzle - still very much work in progress but its coming on a treat down at the Sodbury Vale club rooms. I'll start a thread once I've taken some pictures (never think to take the camera to club!).

Great photos TTG! Good to see you again and a shout-out too to Sidecar Racer who came to say 'hello'.

Myself and my mate Cornishecile went on Saturday , as usual I have to do the report as he is to shy

to write anything . :pardon_mini:

Not a lot to add to previous reports , a nice little show , friendly atmosphere and some nice exhibits in most scales ,

this was our second visit , we missed last year somehow but will certaily be back next year .

but I left her chatting to Paul Davis on Esme River Railroad for 1/2 an hour whilst I chatted to others.

Neal.

What an enthusiast he is, we spent a long time chatting with him , he just loves showing all the little hidden

bits and interiors all detailed to perfection , took great pleasure in decribing his methods of scenary

construction and how he modifies the loco's to fit in with his requirements . He was well chuffed to have this

layout invited to Warley next year .

Great photos TTG! Good to see you again and a shout-out too to Sidecar Racer who came to say 'hello'.

Hi Tim , nice to meet you at the show , will look out for details of the new layout when you start posting ,

saying that I do like the one you have now .

All in all a nice way to pass a few hours .

Anyone have photos of the left hand end of the brewery layout? All the shots I have ever seen seem to be taken from the right hand end...

Thanks!

Nick - How about these:

Outstanding Tim, thanks! Was hoping to see this layout when I was back in the UK earlier this year, never did though. If I remember correctly, isn't this layout only about 4.5 x 1' ?

Hi Nick

Yes, it is a small layout and triangular in plan rather than using more conventional rectangular baseboards. It was built for a DEMU small layout challenge back in 2002.

I'm guessing you already know that the layout is included on this website http://www.emgauge70s.co.uk/modelpageindex.html . Some of the other layouts there by Keir Hardy (RMweb name: Wibble) and his friends are well worth looking out for too. There is a link too that shows exhibitions dates for next time you're in the UK.

Kier Hardy's site is where I first saw this layout, but on that site he has a trackplan and it looks like a rectangular baseboard. The photos I have seen also make it look like a rectangular layout. I am there fore quite surprised to hear that it is not rectangular after all! Will have to do more investigating!

Thanks again!

HI Nick

Unfortunately I don't have a stand back view of the whole layout but if you compare the baseboard depth of these two shots you'll get an idea of the plan view.

I'm not sure as I didn't see the layout arrive or leave but it may be that the boards join together to form a rectangle when transported (that is what I would have done!).

Well, as Two Tone Green asked me on the day and has nudged me again earlier in the thread, I thought it time I put up my first ever post.

Firstly, thank you to everyone for your kind comments on The Brewery. It was indeed built by myself and Tony Wood for the 2002 DEMU competition. The superb stock, and later building additions are courtesy of Peter Johnson (Canada Road). The competition rules dictated a maximum baseboard area of 654 sq ins and we felt that a standard rectangle would be too restrictive. Tony came up with the idea of a triangular layout and devised a very workable trackplan to fit into the space.

The idea is that you don't need much width for a headshunt, so that occupies the narrow end, with the wider end incorporating the sector plate and Brewery building. Basic dimensions are 4'6" long, with the wide end around 18" and the narrow end about 3".

The two main buildings come from the Walthers Meat Packing kit, and the low-relief building is scratch-built by Peter.

The various turnouts were some that Tony had picked up second hand and he fiddled about with them until he got the alignment he wanted. Plain track also came from the spares box.

The layout is just one box, so packing up at the end of a show is very quick - one person either end, lift the board to drop the legs out, then straight into the back of the car. In fact at Thornbury, we had everything dismantled and ready to load in 8 minutes.

The plan has plenty of shunting potential and it can quite easily keep you occupied for a couple of hours. In fact, since we built it we have seen similar, if not identical, formations on a couple of other layouts. All in all, it's great fun, all we're missing is the smell of hops wafting over the rooftops.
