Kallaroonian
I am looking for recommendations for books that give practical advice on 1) scenery building* and 2) scratch-building of structures and buildings. The reader - me - has good practical abilities but limited (and no recent) experience of either subject matter. * by scenery I'm including any and all types of scenic construction but probably with more focus on achieving the final viewed results rather than the scenic superstructure itself. It would also preferably including the construction of trees, hedgerows and other items rather than just the terrain. The inclusion of painting and weathering techniques would be a bonus too. I've seen a few books crop up occasionally in the book review part of RM but I'm wondering whether anyone has any personal recommendations? Chubber
Google 'John H Ahern', his Model Building Construction is as good a place as any to start if you intend to scratchbuild in card and wood despite being first printed in 1939.
Coombe Barton
For trees I don't thik you can better Gordon Gravett's 'Modelling Trees' - http://britishrailwa.../1905184883.php Edit - no specific recommendation for source, just happens to be where I got mine from And would second Chubber's recommendation for the Ahern book. Amazon UK list used copies from £5.93 upwards to astronomical
RMweb Premium Lambton58 Posted January 4, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2012 Wild Swan are a good source. I've got Dave Rowe's book Industrial and Mechanised Modelling and Architectural Modelling in 4mm scale and they're very good. I haven't seen Gordon Taylor's book(s) but if Dewsbury and Gresley Beat are anything to go by then they should be useful. I agree with Chubber - John Ahern's book is a classic. I think someone on here recently used his rural warehouse plan to good effect, but I can't find the thread. Cheers Ralph Lambton58
burgundy
I have always liked "How to build Realistic Model Railroad Scenery" by Dave Frary Kalmbach books 1982 ISBN 0-89024-036-1 All the techniques are water based and the ingredients for each activity are given in simple "recipe book" style. You need to do a little bit of translation to find a UK equivalent to some of the materials but the principles are universal. Best wishes Eric

It was Chubber who built the Welsh Warehouse http://www.rmweb.co....elsh-warehouse/ and the Harbour Office http://www.rmweb.co....harbour-office/ from the Ahern Book

Thanks, methinks Mr Chubber's been a bit modest in his post. Actually they're a couple of good threads to have a look at.
Coombe Barton
You could also have a lok at http://www.rmweb.co....ntry-pub-model/ - country pub and this thread about a mill http://www.rmweb.co....ntry-pub-model/ Chubber (Doug) has a skill that few people can match. And just thought of another book - Modelling Historic Architecture - Derek Bridwell - published by HMRS - ISBN 9780902635157 - Amazon LInks but I got mine from the HMRS Stand at the Leamington(?) show a couple of years back for six quid - not the fifteen that's being asked second hand, but unfortunately it's now out of print http://www.hmrs.org.uk/books/bookdetails.php?bookid=1013
