mopheads OO gauge steelworks stock

Recommended Posts

hello

ive recently been working on a few projects for a planned small steelworks layout set in the early 80's in sheffield modelling an electro furnace steelworks and thought i would share my progress with you all and maybe get some advice and other ideas off fellow members. ive detailed a few items of rolling stock but no layout to run them on yet if i ever get round to it.

well here goes any help or opioins of my models would be great as this is my first attempt at any detailing or scratch building.

first up a Bachmann class 04 modelled as an industrial example fitted with rt models headlights, gibson industrial buffers and modelled with a door open cut from a spare Dapol 04 kit, the loco still needs some work on the handrails, underframes, glazing, couplings and finished in a filthy industrial livery.

next up a Bachmann HEA underframe fitted with a scratch built body made of plasticard losely based on some drawings sent to me by mark saunders of similar wagons at ravenscraig for internal scrap movements, the wagon still needs couplings fitting, final weathering on the body and underframes. i have a few of these wagons on the go at the moment.

last but not least a Dapol lowflat wagon kit with scratch built bufferbeams after i broke one end fitted with the superb Lanarkshire Models & Supplies lowmac buffers, ive delibertely modelled this wagon as missing a buffer as i plan to model this wagon sat in a siding just needs final weathering and couplings fitted.

i wil try and update on my progress soon as im busy moving house

IMHo I would leave the loco in BR blue and patch paint the cab side to get rid of the arrows and allow a new number or/and name on the side.Paint the door in some undercoat and then weather away.

Me too, I'd model it with standard fittings (perhaps one set of buffers different on the rear to give the impression of a work-horse machine, patched up with parts etc.

I'd retain the livery of BR blue but patch paint (in a slightly darker shade of blue to look like fading of original livery) the numbers and replace them with new ones.

Another interesting feature to model would be an additonal cage in-front of the radiator, often seen on industrial diesels.

Perhaps it would be better off leaving the P.O. livery for a true industrial (Janus, Hunslet etc)

just my 2 cents, looking forward to watching this progress

Thanks Paul

I'm beginning to be swayed now, I was going to fully repaint the 04 But after to seeing the picture below I'll just patch paint it as you've suggested

The Briton Ferry Steel Co. at Briton Ferry and Duport Group steel works at Llanelli were both big users of ex-BR shunters.

I remember that lot turning up, along with a Hunslet 0-4-0 and a brace of Hunslet 0-6-0s- the theory at the time was that the works manager had spotted the lot at the back of Norwich shed whilst on a boating trip to East Anglia. It took a couple of years for them to get a repaint; Duport were 'careful' when it came to spending money. The 'shed' was part of the old Llanelli Foundry- my uncle Bill was the watchman there in the early 1970s.

Thanks to some horrible weather I've managed to finally finish an internal user scrap wagon aswell as getting distracted hacking a Dapol 04 kit into a semi derelict state, I should really finish off a few other projects but my curse of been easily distracted has struck again!! I'll upload some photos later
