signaller
Can anyone please point me in the right direction for information on this. I believe it is bi-directional. A signalling plan would be most useful. I also wonder what the signal box is now used for? Picture here, scroll nearly half way down. http://www.skyscrape...ad.php?t=878354 Many thanks Roger Murray
Camberwell Green
Hi Roger, From memory the lines between Southsea and the Harbour are uni-directionally signalled. The lines between Fratton and Southsea are bi-directional and hence there is a fixed red at the Harbour end of one of the platform lines at Southsea High Level. You have probably noticed that the signal gantry at the platform end at the Harbour carries signals for both directions. I think the reason for the ones reading into the platforms at this point was to address compliance issues associated with the call-on movements and visibility of the first train in the platform. Not sure what the signal box is being used for now but it was the Network Rail project office for a while at the end of the resignalling project after Havant had finally taken over control of the area. RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted March 4, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 4, 2012 You can depart northbound from the 'Down' high level platform (2), this being done by terminating empties late at night and also late runners being turned around if there is no space downstairs in the lower level. It is possible for the 'Off' indicators on platforms 1 and 2 to show both 'OFF UP' and 'OFF DN' aspects at the same time!! The line between Southsea and the Harbour is bi-directional but the 'Up' line being used in the 'Down' direction is extremely rare. The old signal box at Portsmouth Harbour is as far as I am aware used as an engineers office, a simliar fate also having befallen the rather dischevelled grey signalbox at Southsea that sits on the site of the old turntable (note the curve in the boundary wall around behind it). Both have been replaced by the rather low rent portacabin affair at Havant in the car park!! It is possible to head north through all three platforms at Fratton and in the Down direction through 2 and 3. Three of the four roads between Fratton and Southsea are fully bi-directional (the most easterly road is the depot road, the most westerly after the junctions allowing access to the lower level is Up only IIRC.
