Poe
Hi everyone, Has anyone on the forums ever fitted orange dcc warning lights to a train? both in N and 00 gauge? I have a packet of low brightness orange surface mount leds, and the required thin gauge wiring, is there nything i should know before attempting this on an N gauge dmu train? Any input here would be gret, thank you.

Suzie
The Bachmann 170 has the orange lenses already fitted for the door lights, you just have to but an orange LED behind with a suitable series resistor (680R should be about right, but it will depend on the LED). Poe
hi suzie, yea want to fit them to a Dapol N gauge dmu train, too, will have to make the lenses but not sure how.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted April 4, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 4, 2012 I've fitted them to 4mm stock, be careful of any heat generated (ie get the resistor right!) as it can soften and/or melt the sides. In 4mm I made a light box, to keep light bleed down to a minimum.
Poe
HI, I have some quarter watt led resistors, as the leds ill be using are quite dim should be ok.
Edwin_m
Another option, especially in N, might be to use a small orange LED with legs, solder the wires to it then enclose in a piece of black heatshrink. Push two optical fibres in the end the light comes out and shrink to cover the LED at both ends. The fibres can then be glued into holes drilled in the body and cut to length outside. This method eliminates light leakage.
Poe
edwin yea that makes sense enough. its just the plastc lens im having trouble figuring out.
Poe
i have a spare hi-fi optical cable i could use thanks for the tip.
Poe
I took your advice edwin and put together a fiber optical light, first started by cutting a piece off an old toslink hi-fi cable i had lying around, and stripping the shielding at both ends: I then drilled 2 x 1mm holes in a 5mm orange LED with a pin vice: then slotted in the fibre cable and glued in place around the edges: Creme egg break! (well after all it's nearly easter) lol All done, heatshrunk together and resistor soldered, the brighness level is spot on and the correct shade of orange! actually looking on google the new dmu's actually use LED's now instead of bulbs.
