Hi Mike,

I have just found this tread and I'm very impressed with the model. I have been searching for this model of a rebuilt West Country for ages but... the feel of the loco was lacking until now.

Just a couple of questions, Is the David Andrews kit easy to build for a beginner and is there any fettling to do or is it just brilliant?

Do you have a picture of the frets and what tools is needed to complete? I guess fret cutters, files, soldering iron, flux, solder, bench, a good light, holding vice and a great deal of time and patience.

Have you still got the plans and are they easy to scan/photo?

I am fortune enough to have plenty of photos to follow and time (early forties)

Many thanks in advance.

Chris

Hi Chris, Peter & George T,

many thanks for bearing with me.

David Andrews kits are among the best on the market, from the quality of the etchings - nickel silver for the chassis and brass for the body + lost wax and whitemetal castings, to the excellent instructions, there is little to fault. I have built more than ten of David's kits and all were a joy to build. The exploded diagrams are very easy to follow and make the build quite straight forward. and if you were to get into difficulty, then a call/email to David will be promptly answered.

I do not have any photos of the etches themselves, but can say that very little cleaning up is required and the resultant piece will fit without any problem when you remove it from the fret.

I do still have the instructions - all 34 pages including diagrams and a list of hints and tools required - if you send me a PM with your email address, I'll scan them in for you.

I hope that you go ahead with building one of David's kits, I'm sure that you will make a good job of it. I look forward to seeing your progress photos on RMweb.

cheers

Mike

Hi Mike and All,

Just ordered mine and awaiting patiently for it to arrive. David is having a batch made as I write. I have decided to use Slaters wheels, but as of yet not sure on the gearbox and motor. It will not be a running model as such, but not putting in a gearbox might be difficult later?? I wondered if anyone could advise of a cheap gearbox as a matter of course.

As time allows I will post up details of the build.

Hi Chris,

well done for taking the plunge. Have a look at Roxey Mouldings website for gearboxes.

cheers
