jonny777
While reading the railway reports in the January 1964 copy of Railway Observer, I came across this note in the London Midland Region section:- "D1697 and D1701, the latter painted in ochre livery, presumably as an experiment, were noted outside the Brush Works at Loughborough on 6th December." This is a new one on me, but does anyone have any other info on this?
'CHARD
Well it's not mentioned here, which tends to be my bible where such matters are concerned: http://www.brushtype4.co.uk/bt4_liveries.php?s_liv=
jonny777
No, and I should have read the February RO more closely as well, rather than having half an eye on the TV last evening. Then I might have noticed the sentence there which mentioned that D1701 was actually in a base coat ready to be transferred to Derby Works for painting. Apparently, Brush at Loughborough were producing locomotives at such a rate, that the paint shop could not keep up with the output and Derby had volunteered to assist. Locos were given a yellow/orange primer and BR running numbers made of wood before transfer. Sorry for the confusion, but it must have been quite interesting to see these locos en route. jjnewitt
Crewe seemed to favour pink instead ochre for theirs! I came across the following pics only the other night. They must have been an odd sight travelling up the WCML in their undercoat. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerryp28/6140903259/in/set-72157626789856530 http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerryp28/6137397340/in/set-72157626789856530
