Sorry should have been more specific. It's the hand one not rotary (i should try the rotary) and yes 40thou is 1mm.

Well I've persevered with my modelling knives and managed to cut out all my windows and doors on the mill buildings.

I find that even with 40 you shouldnt need to actually cut all the way through. usually a deep score is enough then bend and snap. You have to bend it quite a bit to get windows out but the stuff is very forgiving as bouncing back so it does work.

Once I cut the end glazing frames for a good shed in one complete fret out of 80 thou styrene - never again !

I've found that not cutting through plasticard, but effectively scoring, bending and snapping, can sometimes leave a ragged tear and damage on the non-cut side - so I don't recommend that now and prefer to cut completely through for a nice clean cut edge on both sides.

Oh thats odd, never had that happened and used several brands.
