eastwestdivide
This thread: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/43622-mlv-pre-production-shots/ has a fair bit of information. Although it starts with the model, it continues on later pages with real life duties and workings.

roythebus
Interesting that S68009 shown in the photo on the linky has a vacuum pipe fitted, yet the text says that it, bing one of the later batch, wasn't vac fitted! I'm certain that when I learnt the MLVs back in 1979 we were told they were all dual braked. Maybe the vac brake was retro-fitted for operating flexibility? RMweb Premium keefer Posted December 14, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 14, 2013 all were built with vacuum brakes. i think the point the text makes is that the later vehicles could not be used to 'translate' the brakes between air and vacuum braked portions of the same train. e.g. in EMU+MLV+ vac. braked loco-hauled stock, 680001/02/JAs would be in multiple and EP braked with the EMU. the brake/control eqpt automatically converted the brake commands to work on the vacuum brake of the stock - hence the whole train was fully braked and under control of the driver. it would seem that the later MLVs did not have this ability - so although still EP/vacuum dual-braked, there wasn't the same connection between the two systems which would allow the overall control of a mixed-brake train
