50s on the Waverley Route

Hi all,

Moving to Kelso in the near future and whilst househunting found my way to Whitrope and have now developed a fixation with the Waverley!

I've seen it mentioned that 50s had visited at some point but does anyone know any numbers, dates and trains worked?

Even better does anyone have the holy grail of photographs of EE's finest product pounding the route?!

Thanks in advance!!!

Ian B

The list of 50s that are known to have worked the line reads as follows:

D400/1/6/7/16/18/25/29/34/38/42

Photos, however, are somewhat elusive. I'm told that one exists in a book about Carlisle railways but for the life of me can't remember what it's called!

Thats excellent- thankyou! Planning for a new n-gauge WR-themed layout in the new place and looking for excuses to run stuff I already own- some renumbering/ repainting is in order I think but v pleased to pickup a green Dapol D5307 from the Bure Valley Railway shop in Aylsham a couple of weeks ago!

Also received my membership card for the WRHA in the past week and looking forward to visiting on a running day and sampling the new stock. As the guys are on a lookout for an air braked loco how about getting a loan of D402 from Buckfastleigh at some point when its up & running...?! :senile:

I was in correspondence with Kenneth Gray on this subject in the autumn of 2010 and he gave me the following information (which I understand appeared in the "Railway Observer") regarding the period 28th June to 3rd July 1968. It seems a work to rule was in place resulting in certain WCML trains being diverted over the Waverley Route.

28/ 6/68 D416 12.05 Euston - Glasgow (Central)/Perth diverted

1/ 7/68 D429 12.05 Euston - Glasgow (Central)/Perth diverted

2/ 7/68 D418 12.05 Euston - Glasgow (Central)/Perth diverted

3/ 7/68 D400 14.05 Euston - Glasgow (Central) diverted

The most recent list I have from Kenneth includes D402 in addition to those listed by 37175:-

D400 D401 D402 D406 D407 D416

D418 D425 D429 D434 D438 D442

I wonder if there were any recorded in the Up direction as a result of this work to rule? My memory is seeing D402 powering past the closed Lochpark works towards Carlisle. Bruce

Bruce,It might simply be the case that there was no-one around during the day to see any up trains. The 12.05 and 14.05 from Euston would have passed through Hawick in the late afternoon / evening when they would have been more likely to be observed. I have no idea who furnished the information to the RO - it wasn't Kenneth. It's curious that nothing was seen on the Saturday and Sunday (29th and 30th June) unless the work to rule only applied during the week. Bill

Woohoo! Dapol announce D406 in n-gauge just to save me a renumbering and repainting job as its one that featured on the Waverley at some point! It'll look grand alongside my newly acquired B1, A3 and 26! As BR used to say, we're getting there.... :boast:
