Fitting DCC to latest Bachmann Tornado 32-550B

Having purchased the latest Bachmann Tornado in Brunswick Green, I decided to fit DCC and came across a number of problems.

Half the suppliers adverts state 8 pin and half 21 pin decoder required, which is not helpful.

Box says 21 DCC, so 21 pin.

The instruction/data sheet is just a diagram, and it is totally wrong. It shows an 8 pin blanking board mounted in the loco.

In reality the 21 pin blanking board is in the tender. So no need to remove loco body.

There is a multi connector under the tender which needs to be carefully removed. You then remove two screws at front edge of tender, but the third screw is under the rear axle, so you have to partially dismount the rear axle to access the screw head. The fitting of the 21 pin decoder is simple replacement, however great care must be taken when dismounting the blank and mounting the decoder, as with 21 pins it is very tight and the pins are fragile. Reverse this procedure for rebuild. The DCC is simplicity to programme on Bachmann EZ unit.

So the moral is, don't follow the diagram as it's for the previous version, or they put the wrong one in the box.

As for the model, it is beautifully detailed and runs like a dream, responding smoothly even on 1/128 speed setting.

This is not unusual for Bachmann.

Items are upgraded in China and the info isn't always passed through to Bachmann UK straight away.

Apparently the Chinese factory has a free hand to upgrade to the latest specification (if possible) when new batches are produced.

Some upgraded chassis are supplied with an earlier diagram, DCC ready items (newly converted) are supplied with a non DCC ready diagram etc.

Presumably the info supplied is for the pre-Tornado Peppercorn pacifics which were introduced in 2001.
