I went to the Buckingham Railway Centre (Quainton Road) on Monday for their spring enthusiasts event. There were five engines in steam including their visitor 02 Class 24 ‘Calbourne’ from the Isle of Wight Railway. This engine and their resident Beattie well tank 2-4-0T made an interesting comparison of two generations of LSWR suburban tank engine designs. Other engines in steam were BR(W) 0-6-0T 9466, Peckett 2080 and a Sentinel which made unusual sounds for a steam engine. I haven’t seen a Sentinel in steam since the sixties and I had forgotten what they sounded like; no exhaust beat but a racket from the chain drive.
