brian daniels
Last Tuesday I went down to Southampton to have a look at the P&O fleet of ships all in dock at once for their 175 Year Celebrations. After a trip round the harbour to get up close to them I went over on the Hythe Ferry to look at the mass departure in the evening. Shame the weather a bit of a let down but after waiting in the rain on Hythe Pier for a couple of hours, it was worth it to see all 7 in line going down the Solent. DonB
Have a friend who sailed on one of those P&O ships, his 17th Cruise but first without his (recently deceased) wife. I'll download the pictures above for him if you don't mind?
RMweb Gold PhilH Posted July 8, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 8, 2012 I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but some of those are plug ugly IMO, blocks of flats on a hull. I suppose my opinion is coloured by the fact that I can remember seeing the great liners in Southampton in the 50s/60s, but as I said I guess it's all subjective. Not pretty are they? Aurora looks the best of a bad bunch. Some nice photos by the way Brian, especially the second one, with the cranes, and the seventh with the Hythe Pier Tramway. Bibby Line
Thanks for the great shots Brian I was lucky enough to have been on Oriana, great shame about the rain and wind as we left Southampton on Tuesday. My good lady was with me and, not being a good traveller, taking sea sickness tablets and the weather was really ominous. Amazingly it was hot and sunny virtually all the time from leaving the Solent, through Amsterdam on Wednesday morning and until we arrived back in the Solent on Saturday morning (where it was raining as you might expect) ! At all times the sea was described as "slight". Like a mill pond i would have said !! On Friday it was Navy Day at the Port in Zeebrugge and we were told that almost the whole of the Belgium Fleet was present (looked like about 8 Mine Sweepers plus a German warship and a couple from the Royal Navy). I agree with Phil about the "slabs", luckily Oriana looked like a real boat ! Eddie
brian daniels
I am going to Southampton on Thursday to see the 3 Cunard Queens leave together. I must admit the colour of these P&O ships is a bit bland compared to the Cunard liners. I must admit the Ventura is growing on me, slowly, but not from the back! It was nice to see all these ships together rather than individualy, that's what made the day special. Glad you had a nice time Eddie, nice sunset pic. The longest I have been at sea is Harwich-Hook of Holland! I gather these liners are a bit better inside?
